HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – e Five Racing’s Florida Fuego stamped herself as a hot prospect for the upcoming Florida Sire Stakes series Saturday at Gulfstream Park, debuting with a thoroughly professional five-length triumph in the seventh race, a five-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies.

The daughter of Kantharos settled in fourth along the backstretch before making a three-wide sweep on the turn into the homestretch and drawing off to win decisively under Tyler Gaffalione.

“She’s very professional. That’s been her from Day 1,” trainer David Fawkes said. “I was a little concerned because she had to eat dirt for the first time. But once she ate the dirt, she handled it real well. Tyler rode her smart; he kept her in the clear.”

Florida Fuego was purchased for $70,000 at the 2017 Ocala Breeders’ March sale.

“We was kind of a sleeper. There was a big horse right before her. We picked her up, and Dave has done a great job with her,” said Bob Edwards, managing partner of his family stable.

The Florida Sire Stakes series for 2-year-olds sired by stallions standing in Florida is scheduled to get underway Aug. 5. The $100,000 Desert Vixen for fillies and the $100,000 Dr. Fager kick off the tradition rich series, followed by the $200,000 Susan’s Girl (fillies) and the $200,000 Affirmed on Sept.2 and the $400,000 My Dear Girl (fillies) and the $400,000 In Reality Sept. 30.

Three Rules, Delta Bluesman, Dearest Tune Up for Summit of Speed

Three Rules, the 2016 Florida Sire Stakes series hero, was sent to the Gulfstream Park track Saturday for a maintenance five-furlong breeze in preparation for a start in Saturday’s $1 million Summit of Speed card of six stakes. Nominated to both the $150,000 Carry Back (G3), a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds, and the $250,000 Smile Sprint (G3), a six-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up, Three Rules worked an easy five furlongs in 1:03.11. In his previous work, the Jose Pinchin-trained son of Gone Astray drilled five-furlongs in 59.45 seconds, the fastest of 19 recorded.

Monster Racing’s Delta Bluesman drilled six furlongs in 1:11 handily at Monmouth Park for a scheduled title defense in the Smile, also a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ race. Last year, the Jorge Navarro-trained gelding registered a 3 ¾-length decision over Limousine Liberal. Spring Meet leading jockey Tayler Gaffalione has the mount aboard Delta Bluesman.

Gelfenstein Farm’s Dearest, a graded-stakes winner who won the Azalea for 3-year-old fillies on last year’s Summit of Speed program, turned in a bullet workout at Gulfstream Park West Saturday. The daughter of Midshipman breezed five-furlongs in 59 seconds in preparation for a start in next Saturday’s $250,000 Princess Rooney (G2), a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ event.

Multiple Graded-Stakes Winner Gunnevera Breezes Half-Mile

Peacock Racing Stables’ Gunnevera breezed a half-mile in 49.40 seconds at Gulfstream Park West Saturday morning It was his second workout since finishing fifth in the Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico May 20.

The Antonio Sano-trained 3-year-old is being pointed to the Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga July 29. Gunnevera earned graded-stakes credentials at Saratoga last summer while capturing the Saratoga Special (G2). He concluded his juvenile season with a victory in the Delta Downs Jackpot (G3).
“He did it in hand. He didn’t ask him. He’s doing very good,” Sano said. “I’m thinking the Jim Dandy. I could change that, but right now, it’s the Jim Dandy.”

In 2017, the son of Dialed In finished second in the Holy Bull (G2), won the Fountain of Youth (G2) and finished third in the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. He then finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Grows to $47,501

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Saturday, producing a carryover jackpot of $47,501.93 for Sunday’s 11-race program.

Multiple tickets with six winners were each worth $4,940.84.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is routinely paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket sold, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Sunday’s Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11.
