Mal Guapo Coasts to Victory in $50,000 The Perfect Season

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Extravagant Kid ($17.20) saved ground to capture Sunday’s $50,000 Tamiami Handicap at Gulfstream Park, prevailing over 4-5 favorite Brandy’s Girl in the five-furlong turf event for 3-year-olds and up.

Ridden by Jose Batista, Extravagant Kid sat behind dueling pacesetters Apache Brave and Dubai Bob before darting through a hole along the inside rail at the top of the stretch and drawing off to a 1 ½-length victory.

Vicino Racing Stables’ ultra-consistent 4-year-old gelding, whose in-the-money performances in his two most recent races were compromised by wide trips, ran five furlongs in 55.80 seconds.

“He got a good ride,” trainer Milt Wolfson said. “He’s an honest horse and he runs hard. That’s the kind you need.”

Brandy’s Girl, who earned odds-on favoritism by beating the boys in her two most recent races, was forced to race extremely wide after breaking from the No. 11 post position and was fanned eight wide on the turn entering the homestretch. The 4-year-old daughter of Posse offered a strong kick under Luca Panici but was unable to make up the ground she lost throughout the race.

Diddley and jockey Jorge Ruiz closed to finish third, another half-length back.

One race earlier on Sunday’s card, Mal Guapo took the lead from the start of the $50,000 The Perfect Season and was never threatened during a 4 ¼ -length romp in the mile starter stakes.

Ridden by Edgard Zayas, the 7-year-old gelding set comfortable fractions of 24.72 seconds, 47.54, 1:11.90 and 1:23.87 on his way to a final clocking of $1:36.14 under jockey Edgard Zayas.

Claimed for $6,250 May 25 by trainer Oscar Gonzalez for Sansinenea Racing Stable, Mal Guapo captured his 15th career victory as the 2-1 favorite in a field of seven.

“He’s improved a lot. Oscar Gonzalez has done a great job with him. It was a step up form him but there wasn’t a lot of speed in the race. They let him walk the first quarter. After that he posted his own fractions,” Zayas said. “He ran big today.”

Abounding Legacy finished second under Sebastian Saez, a length ahead of late-closing Dream Saturday.

Wednesday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Stands at $16,424

Wednesday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot rose to $16,242.15 for Wednesday’s program at Gulfstream Park when multiple tickets with all six winners on Sunday’s card were each worth $3838.24.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket sold, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Wednesday’s first-race post is set for 1:15 p.m.
