KENTUCKY DERBY SIRE FUTURE WAGER RETURNS; POOL OPEN THURSDAY AND CLOSES SUNDAY AT 6 P.M.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Monday, Nov. 20, 2017) – Offspring sired by Curlin – led by Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) top two Good Magic and Solomini – are 8-1 odds on the morning line for the third annual Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which provides bettors with a unique opportunity to wager on select breeding stars and their entire crop of juveniles with the hope of winning next year’s $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) on Saturday, May 5, 2018.
Derby fans can wager on the sire that will produce the winner of the upcoming Run for the Roses. Like the Future Wager, the sire wager features 23 individual sires of horses in this year’s crop of Kentucky Derby-age Thoroughbreds, along with an “All Others” betting interest.
The Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, will be offered concurrently with Pool 1 of the traditional Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Both betting pools open a four-day run on Thanksgiving Day and close Sunday at 6 p.m. (all times Eastern).
Curlin, the 2007-08 Horse of the Year who has provided 10 winners from 98 juveniles in his sixth crop, is 8-1 on odds maker Mike Battaglia’s morning line odds, but “All Other Sires” is the 4-1 favorite.
Here’s the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager field (with betting number and morning line odds): Bernardini (#1, 20-1), Bodemeister (#2, 20-1), Candy Ride (ARG) (#3, 20-1), Curlin (#4, 8-1), Distorted Humor (#5, 20-1), Ghostzapper (#6, 20-1), Giant’s Causeway (#7, 30-1), Into Mischief (#8, 20-1), Malibu Moon (#9, 30-1), Medaglia d’Oro (#10, 12-1), More Than Ready (#11, 20-1), Overanalyze (#12, 30-1), Pioneerof the Nile (#13, 20-1), Quality Road (#14, 20-1), Scat Daddy (#15, 20-1), Speightstown (#16, 20-1), Street Sense (#17, 15-1), Tapit (#18, 10-1), Tiznow (#19, 20-1), Uncle Mo (#20, 20-1), Union Rags (#21, 30-1), Violence (#22, 30-1), War Front (#23, 15-1) and “All Other Sires” (#24, 4-1).
In addition to Curlin’s duo of Good Magic and Solomini, 10 other sires have offspring that are individual betting interests in the traditional Kentucky Derby Future Wager, led by Medaglia d’Oro (Bolt d’Oro, Enticed and Montauk), Street Sense (Avery Island and McKinzie), Tapit (Mask and Principe Guilherme) and Into Mischief (Engage and Tiz Mischief). The others are Distorted Humor (Quip), Ghostzapper (Dak Attack), More Than Ready (Copper Bullet), Scat Daddy (Mendelssohn), Tiznow (Sporting Chance) and Union Rags (Free Drop Billy).
Bodemeister sired 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and provided a $63.60 win payout in the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager compared to his $11.40 payoff on Derby Day as the 9-2 favorite. The Bodemeister (Always Dreaming) and “all others” (Lookin At Lee by Lookin At Lucky) future Exacta returned $488.20 for $2, whereas it paid $336.20 on the day of the race.
“All Other Sires” was the 7-2 favorite last year and 2-1 choice in the inaugural pool during the fall of 2015. Pioneerof the Nile was the 5-1 second choice last year, while Tapit was the 7-1 leading individual in year one.
Bets can be placed at Churchill Downs Racetrack, TwinSpires.com and other online wagering outlets and satellite wagering centers across North America. Total betting on last year’s Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager was $44,150 with $30,375 in Win bets $13,775 in Exacta combinations – a 26.3% increase from 2015.
No scratches or refunds of wagers are permitted in the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager.
The Nov. 23-26 period will be the only time the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager is offered.
