ASCANIO ‘OK’ AFTER ‘TUMBLE’ AT TRACK

Humberto Ascanio, longtime valued assistant to the late Bobby Frankel, hopes to recover from “a tumble” at the track just before Christmas so he can present a trophy to the winning connections of Saturday’s Grade III Robert J. Frankel Stakes.

“I’m OK, and I’ll try to be there,” Ascanio said by phone from his home in Arcadia Tuesday morning. “I’m going to be all right.”

Ascanio, 71, was hospitalized for a couple days but was discharged in time to be home for Christmas. Ascanio suffered a stroke in 2011 limiting mobility to his ride side, forcing him to give up his training career, but has been lending his expertise at trainer David Jacobson’s barn in advance of Santa Anita’s Winter Meet.

“I try to help when I can,” said Ascanio, who was Frankel’s right-hand man for 36 years before the Hall of Fame trainer died on Nov. 16, 2009, at the age of 68. “I try not to do too much at this stage of my life, but I like being around the barn.

“Will I ever train again? You can never say never.”
