COX, SHARP BATTLE FOR FAIR GROUNDS TRAINING TITLE
With only four racing days left for the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots Winter Meet, the title for leading trainer appears to be going right down to the wire.
In the trainers standings, defending leading conditioner Brad Cox is ahead of Joe Sharp by three wins with 49 victories on the meet including a win in the Grade II Rachel Alexandra Stakes with leading Kentucky Oaks contender Monomoy Girl.
Cox has a dozen horses entered throughout the remaining five days of the met.
“If we win the training title then great, it’s another notch in our cap,” said Cox’s assistant Ricky Giannini. “We’re going for quality horses and we could find a bunch of nickel horses to run to try and get that title, but we definitely want quality over quantity any day of the week.”
While Cox has the lead in the standings, Sharp has potential to score his first Fair Grounds training title with a total of 16 horses entered throughout the duration of the meet.
“We got a lot of horses in but Brad has a lot of live horses in,” Sharp said. “Everything is definitely going to have to go right as far as the last week goes. We’re in a position to catch but I think he’s got some more races to win before it’s all said and done as well.”
