RACE IS PART OF LUCRATIVE GOLDEN STATE SERIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BRED OR SIRED HORSES
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2018)—A visually impressive first-out maiden winner, West Point Thoroughbreds’ Cali Dude rates top billing among a field of 13 California-bred or sired colts and geldings going seven furlongs in Friday’s $200,000 Golden State Juvenile at Santa Anita.
Along with Cali Dude, Square Deal, a stakes winning son of Square Eddie, Pas de Panique, a dark bay or brown colt by Smiling Tiger, Tap Back, a close third to Square Deal two starts back, trainer Mark Glatt’s Chipper and several others all figure prominently at seven furlongs.
CALI DUDE
Owner: West Point Thoroughbreds
Trainer: John Sadler
A $95,000 Fasig Tipton Santa Anita 2-year-old in Training Sale graduate, Cali Dude is by the red hot sire Clubhouse Ride. Although he was dispatched at 10-1, he completely dominated 10 rivals when breaking his maiden by 1 ¼ lengths going 6 ½ furlongs here on Oct. 5. A winner in nearly gate to wire fashion, his gallop out into the Club House turn was perhaps even more impressive than his win. With $200,000 on the line Saturday, the Golden State Juvenile looks like a great spot, but look for Cali Dude to do some big things when he stretches out for Sadler.
SQUARE DEAL
Owner: Arnold Zetcher LLC & Qatar Racing Ltd.
Trainer: Simon Callaghan
By California’s top stallion Square Eddie, Square Deal finished first in both the 5 ½ furlong Graduation Stakes (subsequently dq’d and placed third) and the six furlong I’m Smokin Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 2 and Aug. 30. Most recently fifth, beaten three length going five furlongs on turf in the Speakeasy Stakes here on Oct. 6, he’s likely the horse to beat as he returns to the main track while retaining the services of Flavien Prat. A $230,000 Barretts Select Yearling Sale purchase, he has earnings of $80,300.
