Tiz the Law stays atop “thinning” Kentucky Derby contenders

Authentic may have won the Haskell on July 18 at Monmouth Park, but I’ll go out on a big limb and say he’s no Kentucky Derby horse. He may be by Into Mischief but he’s going to have trouble getting 10 furlongs, even in a slow time. The final time in the mile-and-an-eighth race was 1:50.45, one of the slower times by a 3-year-old this year.

Mike Smith, who was aboard Authentic, thought he had the race won at the eighth-pole, but Ny Traffic put in a furious run late and Authentic barely held on to win by half a head.

I’m dumping a few off the list because they’re not that good.

Tiz the Law (Constitution) 272 points – won Belmont Stakes; Travers in his future.

Honor A.P. (Honor Code) 120 points – won the Santa Anita Derby; headed to Shared Belief
on Aug. 1 at Del Mar.

Art Collector (Bernardini) 100 points – impressive in the Blue Grass.

Authentic (Into Mischief) 200 points – won the Haskell – barely.

Ny Traffic (Cross Traffic) 110 points – threw a scare into Authentic late in Haskell.

Dr Post (Quality Road) 80 points – third in the Haskell.

Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo) 20 points – won Los Alamitos Derby may go to Travers.

King Guillermo (Uncle Mo) 90 points – second behind Nadal in Arkansas Derby.

Cezanne (Curlin) no points – May be headed to Shared Belief.

Ete Indien (Summer Front) 74 points – third in Florida Derby..

Gamine (Into Mischief) no points – won the Acorn and could be a filly looking for roses if she gets into a Derby prep race.
