BREEDERS’ CUP: SENOR BUSCADOR, DIDIA AMONG FRIDAY WORKERS
It was a light morning in terms of Breeders’ Cup workers at Santa Anita Thursday. The only horses pre-entered for next week’s Breeders’ Cup to record timed workouts were Senor Buscador (Classic), Didia (Filly & Mare Turf) and Lane Way (Turf Sprint).
Senor Buscador worked a bullet five furlongs in company under jockey Geovanni Franco, who has the call in the $6 million Classic on Nov. 4. Trained by Todd Fincher, Senor Buscador completed the work in 59.40 seconds. It was the fastest of 19 moves at the distance.
“He went really well, he dragged me around there,” Franco said.
A 5-year-old Mineshaft horse, Senor Buscador won the GII San Diego Handicap this summer at Del Mar. He exits a third-place finish in the GI Awesome Again here Sept. 30.
Didia worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 for trainer Ignacio Correas IV. It was her second drill since winning the GII Rodeo Drive here Oct. 7.
Lane Way worked four furlongs in a bullet 47.0 seconds. It was the fastest of 29 moves at the distance. Winner of the GII Eddie D here Sept. 30, Lane Way is pre-entered in the Turf Sprint for trainer Richard Mandella but did not make the main body of the 12-horse field. He would need multiple withdrawals to compete.
Among those scheduled to work Friday is Classic contender White Abarrio, whose work slated for Monday was postponed. White Abarrio most recently won the GI Whitney Aug. 5 at Saratoga for trainer Richard Dutrow.
The 40th Breeders’ Cup is set for Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita. The post-position draw for all 14 races will be held this Monday starting at 4:45 Pacific at the nearby Pasadena Civic Center. It will be televised on FanDuel TV and streamed on Breederscup.com.

BREEDERS’ CUP: 41 HORSES FROM SANTA ANITA PRE-ENTERED
Southern California racing will be well-represented in the 40th edition of the Breeders’ Cup, which will be held at Santa Anita for a record 11th time on Nov. 3-4.
Of 205 horses from all around the globe pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup this week, 41 hail from Santa Anita. Among the Santa Anita-based horses to be pre-entered was GII Pat O’Brien winner Anarchist in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 4, but he will not compete. Trainer Doug O’Neill Thursday said Anarchist emerged from his work last Saturday with “a small knee chip.” The 4-year-old Distorted Humor colt is slated for surgery on Saturday.
Some of the horses pre-entered did not make the main body of the field but are eligible to run in the event of any withdrawals. A maximum of 14 starters are allowed in each of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races except for the Juvenile Turf Sprint, Turf Sprint and Dirt Mile, which are limited to 12 starters.

INTERNATIONAL STAR DETTORI RIDES THIS WEEKEND AHEAD AT SANTA ANITA
A week after winning two races on British Champions Day at Ascot, international superstar Frankie Dettori is in town to ride at Santa Anita beginning with Saturday’s card.
Last Saturday in England, Dettori won the GI Champions Stakes aboard King of Steel and the GI Queen Elizabeth II with Big Rock. At Santa Anita this Saturday, Dettori has four mounts booked. He’s set to ride maiden Machiavellique (6-1) in the third race for trainer Leonard Powell, maiden Circle of Trust (3-1) in the fifth for trainer Phil D’Amato and Grace Period (3-1) in an allowance for Powell that goes as the seventh. In the featured Lure Stakes at a mile on turf, which goes as the ninth and final, Dettori has the call on eastern-invader Easter (3-1) for trainer Graham Motion.
First post for Saturday’s card is 1 p.m.

MATERIAL FOR SYNTHETIC TRAINING TRACK BEGINS ARRIVING NOV. 13
The material for the $7-million all-weather synthetic surface training track at Santa Anita will begin arriving Nov. 13. The project is part of 1/ST Racing’s announcement last summer that the company will make major financial investments in Southern California racing to enhance safety and wellness for horses.
The transformation of Santa Anita’s traditional sand-based training track to a synthetic Tapeta surface will serve to improve the overall safety environment at Santa Anita Park while giving more options for uninterrupted training especially during winter months which can bring heavy rainfall to Southern California.
The Tapeta surface is expected to be popular for training turf horses, as well as horses who have been racing on synthetic surfaces. Additionally, it will allow for a real-world evaluation of the Tapeta surface in the Southern California environment that the year-round racing and training center experiences.
The material will begin arriving a week after the conclusion of Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet. The material will be stored and mixed in the Colorado parking lot, just north of the track. The timeline for closing the training track to remove the sand material and install a base with drainage is targeted for late November. The project is expected to be completed in mid-January.

RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHER KATEY BARRETT PASSES AWAY AT 91
Renowned equine photographer Katey Barrett, whose work was an integral part of Santa Anita’s opening day Winter Meet souvenir calendar for more than three decades, passed away following a bout with cancer this past Sunday, Oct. 22 at age 91 according to her sister, Jane Barrett.
“Katey had been on hospice and was diagnosed with cancer a couple of months ago,” she said. “She was at Santa Anita and took beautiful pictures for more than 40 years. She received many awards and she was dedicated to serving animals, all animals. A lot of people have been calling and expressing what she has done for them personally, in their lives.
“Katey was a very selfless person.,” Jane Barrett continued. “She was dedicated to helping with the operation of a wild horse sanctuary near Mt. Lassen and keeping the horses free. She was very dedicated to that place. She hadn’t been up there in a while because she was unable to travel.”
Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, Barrett came west to dabble in Hollywood in the late 1950s and found work shortly thereafter on hit TV shows such as My Three Sons, Family Affair, Bonanza and Mission Impossible. She also worked on the production of a movie starring Don Knotts entitled The Shakiest Gun in the West.
Extraordinarily talented, Barrett’s still images were instantly recognizable and were an exemplification of how she viewed life and the spectacular animals that so enriched hers.
The following is a quote from her website which serves as a window into how she approached her craft: “So there you have it. (I’m) a self-taught wanna-be director, still looking through the lens as though it’s going to be a movie and ‘freeze-framing’ when I see the moment…”

FINISH LINES: Top Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Arcangelo worked four furlongs Wednesday in an official time of 47.60 seconds. Clocker Gary Young clocked the move in 47.40 seconds with a five-furlong gallop out in 1:01 flat…Jockeys Edgar Payeras and Jose Valdivia Jr. each won their first races of the Autumn meet Sunday…Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet soccer champions were the Indomables comprised of backstretch staff from trainer Mark Glatt’s barn.
