Oaklawn maiden special weight graduate Apprehend rolled to a record-setting 3 ¾-length victory in the $75,000 Century Mile Handicap for 3-year-olds and up Saturday at Century Mile in Canada.
Heavily favored Apprehend ran 1 mile and 70 yards over a fast track in 1:39.83, breaking stablemate’s At Attention’s short-lived track record (1:40.22), which was set roughly two hours earlier in an allowance race. Barbara Heads trains both horses. Apprehend ($3.50) became the first Oaklawn winner for his sire, champion Arrogate, when he broke his maiden in a sprint for 2-year-olds in December of 2021.
Arrogate was North America’s champion 3-year-old male of 2016 and a 2023 inductee into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Apprehend, 6, is from the first of only three crops of runners for Arrogate, who was euthanized in June 2020 because of neurological illness.
The Century Mile Handicap was the fifth consecutive victory for Apprehend, who hadn’t started since winning the $100,000 G3-BC Premier Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1 3/8 miles Oct. 5 at Hastings Racecourse in Canada. Apprehend, who is based at Hastings, has an 8-3-0 record from 15 lifetime starts and earnings of $317,062. He’s a three-time stakes winner.
Apprehend broke his maiden for trainer Rene Amescua before returning to Southern California-based trainer Peter Miller. Apprehend has made his last six starts in Canada for Heads. Apprehend races for prominent Canadian owner Peter Redekop, who also campaigned Arkansas-bred sprint star Comedero, a multiple Oaklawn stakes winner.
Apprehend became the second Oaklawn-raced horse in a week to set a track record at 1 mile and 70 yards.
Willy D’s ran 1:37.98 in a front-running 4 ½-length victory in the $100,000 Michael G. Schaefer Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds and up July 5 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Willy D’s narrowly missed the North American dirt record for 1 mile and 70 yards (1:37.90), according to Equibase, racing’s official data gathering organization.
Willy D’s has made nine of his 21 career starts at Oaklawn.
