Mastery won the last points’ race in 2016 for the 2017 Kentucky Derby by taking the Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity in Southern California on Dec. 10. In the process he picked up 10 points for the win, with Irap getting four for second, Dangerfield getting two for third and Abu Dhabi receiving one for fourth.
Mastery, a son of Candy Ride, is trained by Bob Baffert and is unbeaten in three starts.
The points’ listed was provided by Churchill Downs and should be very accurate.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) tops the list with 30 points. Second is Practical Joke (Into Mischief) with 14 points. Gunnevera, Lookin At Lee (Lookin At Lucky), Mastery, Gormley (Malibu Moon) Mo Town and McCraken have 10 points.
The rest are as follows: Wild Shot has six points and No Dozing five points; Klimt, Hot Sean, Dangerfield, Syndergaard and Irap with four; Straight Fire, Favorable Outcome, Recruiting Ready, Takaful and Warrior’s Club with two; and Midnight Pleasure, J Boys Echo, Big Gray Rocket, Abu Dhabi, Honor Thy Father, Win With Pride and Uncontested with one point each.
The first points’ races in 2017 for 3-year-olds will be the Jerome at Aqueduct in New York and the Sham at Santa Anita Park in Southern California. Both are tentatively scheduled for Jan. 2nd.
