Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale Starts Monday

LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 5, 2017) – Keeneland’s 59th January Horses of All Ages Sale begins Monday, Jan. 9. A total of 1,893 horses – including broodmares and broodmare prospects, yearlings by leading North American sires and horses of racing age – were cataloged to the sale, which runs through Friday, Jan. 13.

The January Sale catalog includes 726 broodmares, 147 broodmare prospects, 732 yearlings, 281 horses of racing age and seven stallions and stallion prospects.

Horses of racing age include supplemental entry Royal Inheritance, a daughter of Regal Ransom who captured her career debut on Dec. 4 at Aqueduct with an impressive front-running performance to win by 3½ lengths. The 3-year-old filly, cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect, and will sell on Tuesday, Jan. 10 as Hip No. 781A.

Broodmares in the catalog are in foal to 173 premier stallions, including American Pharoah, Awesome Again, Bernardini, Bodemeister, Candy Ride (ARG), City Zip, Declaration of War, Distorted Humor, Gemologist, Ghostzapper, Honor Code, Into Mischief, Kitten’s Joy, Liam’s Map, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Orb, Pioneer of the Nile, Shanghai Bobby, Speightstown, Tapit, Tapizar, Tonalist, Twirling Candy, Uncle Mo, Union Rags, Verrazano and Violence.

The January Sale is a noted marketplace for short yearlings, foals born the previous year who officially became one year old on Jan. 1. Yearlings in the 2017 catalog represent 165 top sires such as Arch, Awesome Again, Bodemeister, Cairo Prince, Candy Ride (ARG), City Zip, Declaration of War, Dialed In, Distorted Humor, Exceed And Excel (AUS), Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, Into Mischief, Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Orb, Pioneerof the Nile, Scat Daddy, Shanghai Bobby, Tapit, Tapizar, The Factor, Uncle Mo, Union Rags, Verrazano and Violence.
Grade 1 stakes winners in 2016 offered as yearlings at the January Sale include Miss Temple City, winner of Keeneland’s Maker’s 46 Mile and Shadwell Turf Mile who captured the Matriarch at Del Mar on Dec. 4; Mind Your Biscuits, winner of Santa Anta’s Malibu on Dec. 26; and Practical Joke, who won the Hopeful and Champagne in New York. In addition, Alert Bay and Noholdingback Bear, both Grade 3 winners last year, were purchased as yearlings at the January Sale.

Sessions begin at 10 a.m. ET each day. The sale will be streamed live on Keeneland.com.
In addition, TVG2 will air gavel-to-gavel coverage for the first two days of the sale (Jan. 9-10) with additional coverage on Jan. 11. Christina Blacker will be on-site at Keeneland during the first two days to provide reports and interviews for both TVG and TVG2.
