We’ve now had four points’ races in 2017 on the road to the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May and all of them have been run on sloppy racetracks. That still may not give one a good idea how the colts will go over a dry surface.
The Smarty Jones was run on Jan. 16 at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. and it was won by Uncontested and he picked up 10 points in the process, which gives him a total of 11 on the points’ board. Second was Petrov, third was Warrior’s Club and Rowdy the Warrior was fourth.
The Lecomte was held Jan. 21 at Fair Grounds in New Orleans and Guest Suite was the winner, second was Untrapped, followed by Takeoff and Arklow.
The next three points’ races will be held on Feb. 4 and hopefully we can get some dry ground for the contenders. Those races are the Withers at Aqueduct, Holy Bull at Gulfstream and the Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita.
From now on I’m only going to list the top 20 colts in points’ order. The full list can be found at the Churchill Downs web site.
