TRAINER BRET CALHOUN’S THREE ENTRIES FINISH 1-2-3 IN STAKES

OPELOUSAS, LA – The $50,000 Cajun Miss Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Evangeline Downs might better have been called The Bret Calhoun Show. The trainer entered three horses in the field of 10 for the Friday night feature and those three fillies finished first, second and third. The winner, Splash Hit, was able to turn away her two stablemates in the stretch and score a 2-3/4 length victory, covering the seven furlongs in 1:24.53 over the fast track.

Splash Hit was in contention right from the start in the Cajun Miss, sitting second behind fellow Calhoun trainee, the 7-5 favorite Shamrock Star. Shamrock Star set strong opening fractions of 22.48 seconds for the quarter-mile and 45.92 seconds for the half-mile. Splash Hit was able to move up on the inside of the leader around the far turn and took the lead at the top of the stretch. The third Calhoun runner, Kat’s Infatuation, made a late move on the rail to take second from Shamrock Star, who held off closer Red La Rosa for third.

Splash Hit was bred in Kentucky by Runnymede Farm, Inc., James Clay and W.C. Catesby. She is owned by Carl R. Moore Management, LLC. The winning rider aboard Splash Hit was Roberto Morales, who was able to win four races on the Friday night program. Splash Hit has now won three races in four lifetime starts and the $30,000 first-place purse for the win in the Cajun Miss increases her lifetime earnings to $64,200.

Splash Hit paid $19.00 to win, $8.00 to place and $4.20 to show. Kat’s Infatuation returned $4.00 to place and $2.80 to show, while Shamrock Star paid $2.60 to show.

Live racing will continue at Evangeline Downs on Saturday night with a nine-race program. The featured event on the Saturday card is the $50,000 Ragin Cajun for 3-year-olds. The 9-5 morning-line favorite is the Danny Pish trainee, U S Officer, who won the $100,000 Clever Trevor at Remington Park last November and has also run in two graded stakes races in his nine-race career. Post time for the Saturday program will be 5:40 pm Central Time.
