THE TABULATOR TAKES IOWA STAKES IN SECOND START

Carolyn Wilson’s The Tabulator, a debut winner by nine lengths at Arlington International Racecourse on July 2, showed no weaknesses when trying dirt for the first time in the Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes on Friday at Prairie Meadows. Under Arlington’s leading rider Jose Valdivia, Jr., who gave up his Friday mounts at the Chicagoland oval to travel to Iowa, the Larry Rivelli trainee bested seven others with a 2¼-length win in the six-furlong race on July 28.

“He loves the dirt,” said Rivelli. “We’re thinking he might even be better when he goes longer.”

The Tabulator, a 2-year-old colt by Dialed In, picked up his second win in as many starts. He is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Fly to the Stars, a stakes-placed half-sister to multiple juvenile stakes winners. Wilson purchased the colt for $460,000 at the OBS March Sale for 2-year-olds; The Tabulator had sold twice previously through Keeneland Sales, as a weanling for $15,000 and for $92,000 as a yearling.

Rivelli is considering the Arlington-Washington Futurity, a seven-furlong race on the Polytrack at Arlington Sept. 9, as a possibility for The Tabulator, but said his preference is to run the colt back on the dirt. The Grade III Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 16, a “Win and You’re In” event for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is a possibility, with consideration also being given to the Grade III Delta Downs Jackpot on Nov. 18.

TRIO POSSIBLE FOR BROWN’S BEVERLY D. DEFENSE

Trainer Chad Brown, a three-time winner of the Grade I Beverly D. at Arlington International Racecourse, is likely to have a trio of runners in the filly and mare race on Aug. 12. The Beverly D. is a “Win and You’re In” even for the Grade I $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 4.

Sheep Pond Partners and Bradley Thoroughbreds’ Dacita (CHI), winner of the Grade I Diana at Saratoga last summer, began her 2017 season with a close second-place finish in the Grade III Beaugay Stakes at Belmont Park in May before finishing off the board in the Grade II New York Stakes on June 9. The 6-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy was a three-time Group I winner in her native Chile before coming to North America, and will be looking to add another prestigious victory to her resume.

Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Grand Jete (GB), a 4-year-old filly by Dansili (GB), is undefeated in her three starts this year, including the Grade III Eatontown Stakes at Monmouth Park on June 3. The daughter of multiple French graded-stakes winner Modern Look is a winner on the turf at a mile as well as 1 1/16-miles, and holds a third-place finish over the Polytrack in France going the Beverly D. distance of 1 3/16-miles

Brown may also saddle Rainha Da Bateria as part of Lael Stables’ duo of entries, which is likely to include Arnaud Delacour trainee Hawksmoor (IRE). The 5-year-old mare by Broken Vow finished third behind Dacita in last year’s Diana and is coming off a win at Woodbine on July 2 in the Grade II Dance Smartly Stakes.

Brown won the 2016 Beverly D. with Sea Calisi (FR) for owner Martin Schwartz. His prior victories came in 2015 with Michael Kisber, Bradley Thoroughbreds and Nelson McMakin’s Watsdachances and in 2011 with Schwartz’s Stacelita (FR).
