Who:
Jose Ortiz is one of the leading jockeys in the American racing circuit. In a stellar 2016 campaign, Ortiz led the pack by number of wins—which included his first Breeders’ Cup victory in the Juvenile Turf aboard Oscar Performance and the annual NYRA riding title with four straight individual meet titles at Saratoga, Belmont Spring/Summer, and Aqueduct Spring and 2015-2016 Inner Track. He is widely recognized for his accomplishments as the regular rider of 2015 Eclipse Awards Female Sprint Champion La Verdad, and 2017 Belmont Stakes Champion Tapwrit. Like his older brother Irad, Ortiz began riding at Hipodromo Camarero in Puerto Rico prior to coming to the U.S. in 2011.
Irad Ortiz began his riding career at Hipodromo Camarero in Puerto Rico with a collected success that has carried over to the American racing circuit, since arriving on the scene in 2011. He was Saratoga’s leading rider for Grade 1 wins in 2012 with three—the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes with Questing, and the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap with Poseidon’s Warrior. Ortiz won his first Breeder Cups’ race on Lady Eli in the 2014 Filly and Mare, followed by two Breeders’ Cup victories in 2015, aboard Stephanie’s Kitten in the Filly and Mare Turf, and Lady Shipman in the Turf Sprint. Ortiz won back-to-back NYRA riding titles in 2014 and 2015 with 278 and 280 wins, respectively; including Saratoga en route his 2015 title.
Jose and Irad Ortiz are respectively the #1 and #2 Leading Jockeys at the 2017 Saratoga Meet, as of July 31. Follow Jose Ortiz on Twitter: @jose93_ortiz. Follow Irad Ortiz on Twitter: @iradortiz.
Albert Stall, Jr. comes from a linage of thoroughbred owners and breeders. Among the horses they owned were Lady Vi-E, who won the 1970 Kentucky Oaks, and Combat Ready, winner of the 1973 New Orleans Handicap. Training horses since 1991, Stall’s career highlights include winning 19 stakes races with Star Guitar from 2007 through February 2012. The four-time Louisiana-bred Horse of the Year and Fair Grounds Hall of Fame member earned more than $1.7 million in 30 career starts. Stall’s biggest moment as a trainer, however, came in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic when Blame narrowly upset the previously undefeated and favorite Zenyatta. Blame went on to end-of-season honors, as the Eclipse Awards Champion Older Male; also scoring wins in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster and Whitney Stakes.
