Who:
Javier Castellano is one of the world’s best riders. He experienced his first major win in 2004 at the Breeders’ Cup Classic atop Ghostzapper, who would go on to earn the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year and other significant honors. In 2006, Castellano rode Bernardini to victory in the Preakness Stakes, the Travers Stakes, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He set a record with his fifth Travers win in 2015 aboard Keen Ice, upsetting Triple Crown champion American Pharoah. His previous Travers wins were aboard V. E. Day in 2014, Stay Thirsty in 2011, Afleet Express in 2010, and Bernardini in 2006. He is a favorite at Saratoga Race Course, championing four five-win days (Sept. 13, 2013/July 25, 2010/Sept. 3, 2005/Sept. 6, 2004), as well as the riding title in 2014. Castellano won his fourth consecutive Eclipse Awards in 2016 as Outstanding Jockey, and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Aug. 4, 2017. Castellano is going into this Saturday’s Alabama Stakes with three prior wins atop Embellish the Lace in 2015, Princess of Sylmar in 2013, and Pine Island in 2006.
Brian Lynch is a multiple-graded stakes winning trainer who started out as a professional bull rider on the rodeo circuit before taking out a trainer’s license for horse racing. In 2004, Lynch dispersed his stable to become the assistant to Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel. He saddled his first Grade 1 winner in the 2014 Longines Just a Game with Coffee Clique at Belmont and enjoyed a personal-best year in 2015 with seven graded stakes wins and total earnings of more than $4.2 million, bolstered by multiple graded stakes-winning millionaires Grand Arch, Clearly Now and Coffee Clique. In 2016, Lynch earned his first career Breeders’ Cup victory when Oscar Performance powered to a clear triumph in the Juvenile Turf. Oscar Performance is coming off a win in the Grade 1 Secretariat at Arlington last weekend, his second straight Grade 1 victory this season. Other top horses trained by Lynch include multiple graded stakes winners Sugar Swirl, Bay to Bay and Heart to Heart. Lynch’s Unchained Melody is one of the favorites in this weekend’s Alabama Stakes.
Jimmy Patsos came to Siena College after nine transformative years as the head coach of the Men’s Basketball program at Loyola University Maryland. He led Loyola to a school-record 24 wins and a MAAC Championship in 2011-12. The Greyhounds went 23-12, the following year, advancing to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The two-year run marked the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in Loyola’s Division I history. On April 3, 2013, Patsos was named the 16th head coach in Siena Basketball history. In his first three seasons at the helm of the program, Patsos piloted the Saints to a pair of 20-win campaigns and national postseason tournament appearances—including the 2014 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Championship title. For the Saints’ immediate success, he was rewarded with a two-year contract extension from the college; lengthening the current deal through the 2020-21 season. This fall, Patsos will be entering his fifth season as the head coach of the program. He is a passionate horse racing fan and an annual featured guest on At The Post Live.
