SHOGOOD, PUNTSVILLE HEADLINE SATURDAY OVERNIGHT STAKES
On Sept. 16 Arlington International Racecourse will honor two recently departed trainers who were beloved by the racing community at the Chicagoland oval. In the fourth race, the $65,000 Jeff Lynn Memorial Stakes drew a field of nine to run six furlongs over the main track. Jeffrey C. Lynn, who began training in 1993, saddled 3,004 starters during his career and won 300 races. Jeff passed away in March at the age of 53 after a two-year battle with cancer. Cross-entered in a race earlier on the card, William Stiritz’s graded-stakes winner Shogood will highlight the stakes should he run. The 2015 Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity winner is one of three entries for the team of Stiritz and trainer Scott Becker. The 4-year-old son of Nobiz Like Shobiz has hit the board in all five of his starts this season, including a win over the Polytrack on July 16 at Arlington. Coming off a close second-place finish here last out, the colt will be piloted by Mitchell Murrill from gate six.
Becker will also saddle Stiritz’s seven-time winner Goneghost. The 4-year-old son of Cherokee Rap has two wins over the Polytrack at Arlington this season, at six furlongs and 1 1/16 miles. Ridden by Chris Emigh from post seven, the gelding will once again face Patricia’s Hope LLC’s Larry Rivelli-trained Good Bye Greg. The 6-year-old son of Teuflesberg gets the services of Santo Sanjur for the first time as they break from gate three.
Mongol Bull (Edgar Perez, post one), Reigning Catfish (Carlos Marquez, Jr., post two), Gorgeous George (Jose Lopez, post four), Richiesinthehouse (Julio Felix, post five), St. Louie Guy (Victor Santiago, post eight), and Armando’s Star (Fernando De La Cruz, post nine) complete the field.
Two races later, eight fillies and mares will assemble for the $65,000 Richard Scherer Memorial Stakes. Richard R. Scherer, known by most as Richie, took out his license at the age of 18 and landed his first winner in May of 1987. He saddled 5,556 starters and won 805 races during his career, including five graded-stakes. Richie passed away in May at 53 after battling cancer.
S D Brilie Ltd.’s Puntsville will try to make it back-to-back stakes wins for the second time in her career. The 5-year-old daughter of Cashel Castle is coming off a 3¼-length victory in the Hoist Her Flag Stakes at Canterbury Park for trainer Michele Boyce. She won her seasonal debut at Arlington in May before finishing second in the Isaac Murphy Stakes in her next start. Victor Santiago will ride from gate five.
Hugh Robertson and Barry Butzow’s multiple stakes winner Thoughtless will try to turn the tables on the Boyce trainee after finishing second to her in the Hoist Her Flag Stakes last month. The Robertson-trained daughter of Rockport Harbor has won two stakes races earlier this season when returning from a year layoff in March. The 5-year-old mare gets the services of Mitchell Murrill as they break from the rail.
Jonathan Thomas will saddle Delicate Lady for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. The 4-year-old daughter of Thunder Gulch has two wins from two starts over the Arlington main track, including a 4¼-length victory in June. Grade III-placed as a juvenile, the filly will be ridden from post three by Santo Sanjur as she tries for her first stakes win.
Luvin Bullies (Julio Felix, post two), Diadura (Carlos Marquez, Jr., post four), Darlin Rosie (Edgar Perez, post six), Shackin Up (Chris Emigh, post seven), and Black Angel (Olaf Hernandez, post eight) complete the field.
ULLOA LANDS FIRST WIN SINCE INJURY
Apprentice jockey Carlos Ulloa made a winning return to the races at Arlington International Racecourse on Sept. 14. The 21-year-old rider from Puerto Rico had been out since July 20 with a broken collarbone, but rode Tim Hughes’ Away She Glows ($13)to a 1½-length victory in the first race for trainer Dennis Hughes.
“I feel great,” said Ulloa. “I had a long time out – I would come here to watch the races, see everybody winning, and I missed it. I feel blessed for the chance to come back and win with my first mount.”
Ulloa won his first race last November at Hawthorne Racecourse aboard Silver Leaf Stables’ J Jett for trainer Cheryl Winebaugh. Since recording his 40th career win on July 1 Ulloa rides with a five-pound weight allowance.
