LOUISIANA INVADERS BUDRO TALKING, HIGH PROVIDENCE
TOP DIXIANA BOURBON FIELD
Jerry Durant’s Budro Talking and Run For The Cross’ High Providence, the 1-2 finishers in last month’s Sunday Silence at Louisiana Downs, head a field of 14 2-year-olds and one also-eligible entered Thursday for Sunday’s 27th running of the $250,000 Dixiana Bourbon (G3).
The 1 1/16-mile grass race is a “Win and You’re In” race for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) to be run Nov. 3 at Del Mar. The Dixiana Bourbon will go as the eighth race on Sunday afternoon’s 10-race program with a 5:10 ET post time.
Trained by Danny Pish, Budro Talking won the Sunday Silence by 1¾ lengths in his grass debut. Joe Bravo will have the mount Sunday and break from post position six.
High Providence won his turf debut at Lone Star before his start in the Sunday Silence. Trained by Jason Meaux, High Providence will be ridden by Jon Court and break from post position five.
Other chief contenders figure to be John Tippmann and Arawak, the 2-3 finishers in last month’s Turf Showcase Juvenile Stakes at Kentucky Downs.
Trained by Kenny McPeek, John Tippmann broke his maiden at second asking on dirt at Ellis before making his grass debut at Kentucky Downs. Robby Albarado will have the mount and break from post position eight.
Arawak, who made his grass debut in the Coventry (G2) at Royal Ascot, finished fifth in the Best Pal (G2) on dirt at Del Mar before returning to the turf at Kentucky Downs. Trained by Wesley Ward, Arawak will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., and break from post position 14.
The field for the Dixiana Bourbon, with riders and weights, is: Tigers Rule (Miguel Mena, 118 pounds), Fred’stwirlincandy (Brian Hernandez Jr., 118), Tap Daddy (Florent Geroux, 118), Wicked Trick (Shaun Bridgmohan, 118), High Providence (Court, 118), Budro Talking (Bravo, 120), King Valero (Cesar Ordaz, 118), John Tippmann (Albarado, 118), Captivating Moon (Jose Valdivia Jr., 118), Trenton Traveler (Sophie Doyle, 118), Machtree (Corey Lanerie, 118), Flameaway (Julien Leparoux, 118), Admiralty Pier (Luis Saez, 118) and Arawak (Santana Jr., 118). Also-Eligible: Shared Value (Jack Gilligan, 118).
NBC Sports Network will broadcast the Dixiana Bourbon and $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) from 5-6 p.m. ET.
BRADLEY WANTS HOT PACE FOR DIVISIDERO
IN SHADWELL TURF MILE
Gunpowder Farms’ Divisidero was reacquainted with Keeneland Thursday morning as he began his local preparations for Saturday’s $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile (G1).
“This is our shot to make it to the Breeders’ Cup,” trainer Buff Bradley said of the two-time Grade 1 winner, a 5-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy. “I just hope there will be some (fast) pace in the race.”
The Shadwell Turf Mile is a “Win and You’re In” race for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) to be run Nov. 4 at Del Mar.
Divisidero overcame a slow pace to win the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day but has been off the board in his past two starts.
“There has been no pace the last three times he has run,” Bradley said. “He has run his race each time, but there was no pace. He is doing as well as ever and I have complete confidence in him. Julien (Leparoux) has worked him the last three times and said he is as good as ever.”
Divisidero ran here in the spring, finishing second beaten a nose in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race in which there was a fast pace.
“That was a loaded race; a stakes race that passed for an allowance race,” Bradley said of the field that contained multiple stakes winners. “We got what we wanted out of that (for the Turf Classic). We know he likes the course and this should be a fun race for him.”
PATIENCE PAYS OFF FOR STOLL KEENON OGDEN PHOENIX
ENTRANT FAVORITE TALE
A lot has happened to PJG Stable’s Favorite Tale since he finished third behind Runhappy in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Keeneland and it hasn’t all been good.
“We have taken our time with him, but I think he is fitter than he has ever been,” said Paul Conaway, the man behind PJG Stable. “One of the reasons we came here (for Friday’s Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix-G2) is he likes this track and it’s a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup.”
Friday’s race will mark only the fourth race for Favorite Tale since the 2015 Breeders’ Cup and only his second in 19 months.
Favorite Tale won the Fabulous Strike at Penn National a month after the Breeders’ Cup but then things started to go south.
“He was at Gulfstream Park training for a trip to Dubai when he got hurt,” Conaway said. “He had a shoe flip up on him and he stepped on it with his left foot and that took care of going to Dubai.
“After we got that bruise taken care of, he had one start in March at Parx and noticed he was a little off so we stopped on him again.”
Trained by Guadalupe Preciado, the 6-year-old gelded son of Tale of the Cat was getting ready to try for a Breeders’ Cup shot in 2016 when two days before his prep race things were not right.
“He had surgery to get a chip taken out of his knee,” Conaway said. “We have given him plenty of time. We took him down to Fair Hill (Training Center in Maryland) and then to Jonathan Sheppard’s farm in Pennsylvania.
“He had done a lot of road work and jogging before we started him back galloping.”
Favorite Tale finally made it back to the races after nearly 18 months off and ran second in the Banjo Picker Sprint at Parx.
“I was really happy with his effort,” Conaway said of the race on Sept. 2.
Favorite Tale, who arrived at Keeneland Thursday morning, has had three works since the Banjo Picker Sprint, the most recent coming Sunday with a half-mile in :48.98 at Parx. Paco Lopez has the mount Friday.
