“EQUAL” CASSE FILLIES TARGET QUEEN ELIZABETH II CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED BY LANE’S END
Dream Dancing and La Coronel – two 3-year-old fillies owned by John C. Oxley and trained by Mark Casse — will face each other in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane’s End (G1) for the first time since their 1-2 finish in the Edgewood (G3) at Churchill Downs on May 5, where La Coronel beat her stablemate by a half-length.
Five months after that race, Casse sees both fillies as having similar talent.
“It’s funny, all along when they’ve ever ran against each other, La Coronel has beat Dream Dancing,” Casse said. “Obviously Dream Dancing’s last race (winning the Del Mar Oaks-G1 on Aug. 19) was very good. I think they’re pretty equal. Hopefully, if one of them comes with their best race, it will be good enough. It’s going to be a very tough race.”
After placing in the Wonder Again (G3) at Belmont, Dream Dancing finished off the board in the Lake George (G3) at Saratoga before traveling to Del Mar to win the Del Mar Oaks by a nose.
“We flew her to California, and honestly the only race that she could have possibly run in would have been the race at Belmont (the Sands Point-G2) that La Coronel was in.,” Casse said about the Tapit filly. “We didn’t want to run against each other, plus we didn’t want to come back that quickly with her.”
In June, La Coronel traveled to England to contest the Coronation (G1) at Royal Ascot, where she finished fifth. Running fourth in the Lake Placid (G2) at Saratoga, the daughter of Colonel John was most recently second in the Sands Point at Belmont Sept. 16.
La Coronel has won twice over the Keeneland turf, having captured the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G3) in 2016 and the Appalachian (G3) Presented by Japan Racing Association in April. Dream Dancing was fourth in the Appalachian. Casse hopes that getting La Coronal back onto a course she likes will be a positive influence.
“I find that there are some horses that like Keeneland’s course better than others,” he said. “And that was one of the real positives is that she does like Keeneland’s turf course.”
The Casse fillies shipped to Keeneland from Churchill Downs Tuesday and visited the main track for the first time Wednesday morning.
IRISH IMPORTS PAYING OFF FOR SLAM DUNK RACING
Two offspring of the Irish stallion Sir Prancealot will be going postward in Saturday’s $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane’s End (G1) for Slam Dunk Racing: Beau Recall (IRE) and Madam Dancealot (IRE).
“It is just a coincidence both are by Sir Prancealot,” said Nick Cosato, the managing partner for Slam Dunk. “We were looking at them as individuals, but if we get a few more Sir Prancelots, it no longer will be a coincidence. He is a new sire and we wanted to see how they would handle firm turf over here.”
Madam Dancealot, who will be ridden Saturday by Jamie Theriot, comes into the QE 2 off a third-place finish in the Del Mar Oaks (G1) that was on the heels of a victory in the San Clemente (G2). Beau Recall, who will be ridden by Joe Talamo, has run second in three graded stakes and was beaten only a nose in the Del Mar Oaks.
“They have both panned out,” Cosato said. “We got Beau Recall for a good price after she just broke her maiden and we brought her over here with the idea of running in a starter race down the hill (the 6½-furlong course at Santa Anita). But they didn’t write any such races, so we put her in over her head and she won. She has far exceeded our expectations.
“We were actually thinking of running her in a Grade 3 in two weeks (the $100,000 Autumn Miss at Santa Anita Oct. 29), but we think she deserves to be in a Grade 1. She has shown that.”
Madam Dancealot was purchased earlier and made her debut in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Santa Anita.
“She broke poorly that day and Johnny (Velazquez) just rode her around there and took care of her,” Cosato said.
After the Breeders’ Cup, Madam Dancealot mainly sprinted down the hill at Santa Anita before hitting her stride at Del Mar.
“Corey Nakatani, who had been riding her, thought she’d rate going a mile and an eighth and Jamie (Theriot) thinks she will be better the farther she goes,” Cosato said.
Both fillies had their final works for Saturday’s race at Santa Anita on Sunday and flew to Lexington Tuesday. They limited their Wednesday morning activity to light exercise on Keeneland’s all-weather training track.
Simon Callaghan trains Beau Recall, and Richard Baltas trains Madam Dancealot. Both trainers are seeking their initial Keeneland stakes victories.
