Inaugurated in 1999, the Kentucky Derby Future Wager has been offered for a 20th consecutive year, but this marks only the fifth time that Churchill Downs has hosted a KDFW pool in November on closing weekend of its Fall Meet.

This year’s early Derby betting menu also included the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which, for the third consecutive year, provided bettors with a unique opportunity to wager on select breeding stars and their entire crop of juveniles with the hope of winning next year’s Kentucky Derby.

“All Other Sires” and Medaglia d’Oro, the sire of Bolt d’Oro, Montauk and Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) winner Enticed, closed as co 5-1 favorites. Curlin, the sire of Good Magic and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Solomini, was close behind at 6-1.

Total betting on the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager was $42,953 ($27,731 in the Win pool and $15,222 in the Exactas), which was slightly off 2.7% from last year’s $44,150 ($30,375 in the Win pool and $13,775 in the Exactas).

The KDFW and Sire Future Wager combined to handle $293,212 compared to $265,951 in 2016, a jump of 10.3%.

Dates for the remaining 2018 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future pools are Feb. 9-11 (KDFW Pool 2), March 9-11 (KDFW Pool 3 and Kentucky Oaks Future Wager) and April 6-8 (KDFW Pool 4). Visit www.KentuckyDerby.com/FutureWager for more information.
