Back in Business
Trainer Mike Johnson has claimed four horses this month on behalf of Texan Jan Haynes and said Oaklawn’s leading owner in 2008 is in the process of rebuilding her stable.
Haynes, then backed by Jorge Lara, a former assistant to six-time Oaklawn training champion Cole Norman, won 17 races at the 2008 meeting. But she has won only 20 races overall since 2012 and started just one horse this year.
“She just kind of wants to get back going like she was,” Johnson said Friday morning, adding trainer Bret Calhoun helped bring the two together. “She puts money into the account every week. I think I’ve been in for 20 different horses. She wants to get back going pretty strong.”
Johnson said the horses he is claiming for Haynes will go to Kentucky after the Oaklawn meeting ends April 14.
“It will be a good deal for us,” Johnson said. “I may even try to go to Texas at some point. Maybe not this year, but we’ll just see how this relationship goes.”
