Kentucky Derby 1-2 Finishers Justify, Good Magic Lead Five Graduates of Keeneland Sales Entered in Preakness

LEXINGTON, KY (May 16, 2018) – Undefeated Justify, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) on May 5, and Derby runner-up and champion Good Magic lead the five graduates of Keeneland’s 2016 September Yearling Sale who are among the eight horses entered today in Saturday’s 143rd running of the $1.5 million Preakness (G1) at Pimlico.

Keeneland sales have produced 23 Preakness winners, including Exaggerator in 2016 and Cloud Computing in 2017 and four consecutive winners from 2010-2013: Lookin At Lucky, Shackleford, Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another and Oxbow.

Justify, the 1-2 morning-line favorite to win the Preakness, is the 22nd Keeneland sales graduate to win the Kentucky Derby. A total of 19 Keeneland sales alumni have won the Belmont (G1), the third leg in the Triple Crown, which will be run June 9.

Keeneland sales graduates entered in the 2018 Preakness are:

Diamond King (Quality Road-Akron Moon) – Winner of the Federico Tesio Stakes and Heft Stakes at Laurel and third in the Swale (G3) at Gulfstream Park, Diamond King was consigned to the September Sale by Four Star Sales, agent, and sold for $55,000 to Waves Bloodstock. JSM Equine bred the colt, who races for Cash Is King, D. J. Stable and LC Racing and is trained by John Servis. Javier Castellano will ride Diamond King in the Preakness.

Good Magic (Curlin-Glinda the Good) – The champion 2-year-old colt of 2017, Good Magic won Keeneland’s $1 million Toyota Blue Grass (G2) before his runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby. For breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, consigned Good Magic to the September Sale, where he was purchased for $1 million by Mike Ryan, agent for e Five Racing. Chad Brown trains Good Magic for e Five Racing Thoroughbreds and Stonestreet Stables. The colt will be ridden by Jose Ortiz.

Justify (Scat Daddy-Stage Magic) – Breeder John D. Gunther’s Glennwood Farm, agent, consigned Justify to the September Sale, where he sold for $500,000 to China Horse Club and Maverick Racing. Racing for China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing and WinStar Farm, Justify won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in April prior to his Derby win. He is trained by Bob Baffert and will be ridden by Mike Smith.

Lone Sailor (Majestic Warrior-Ambitious) – Owner G M B Racing purchased Lone Sailor, second in the Louisiana Derby (G2) who next ran in the Kentucky Derby, at the September Sale for $120,000. Gainesway, agent, consigned the colt, bred by Alexander-Groves-Matz. Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride Lone Sailor for trainer Tom Amoss.

Sporting Chance (Tiznow-Wynning Ride) – D. Wayne Lukas trains the Grade 1 winner, who was third in the Southwest (G3) in February and is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Breeder Hunter Valley consigned Sporting Chance as a weanling to the 2015 November Breeding Stock Sale, where he sold for $275,000 to Lapis Bloodstock. Woods Edge Farm, agent, consigned the colt to the September Sale, where owners William Mack and Robert Baker bought him for $575,000. Sporting Chance will be ridden by Luis Contreras.

Racing fans are invited to Red Mile for simulcast wagering on Pimlico and other major North American race tracks. First post for Friday’s Pimlico card is 11:30 a.m. ET. Races include the Black-Eyed Susan (G2), Pimlico Special (G3), Adena Springs Miss Preakness (G3) and Allaire duPont Distaff (G3).
On Saturday, day of the Preakness (G1), the first scheduled post at Pimlico is 10:30 a.m. The undercard includes the Dixie (G2), Gallorette (G3) and Maryland Sprint (G3).

Advance wagering for the entire Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness Day card is available at Red Mile beginning Thursday at 12:55 p.m. and also will be available Friday at 11:15 a.m.
