Who:

Rick Violette served as the President and board member of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association from 2008 to 2017. Under his leadership, NYTHA went from near bankruptcy to financially stable; to the point where in 2016, it contributed nearly $2 million to benevolence initiatives, donated more than $350,000 annually to equine aftercare initiatives, and increased contributions to scholarships for backstretch workers and their families and funding for backstretch recreation programs. He was named Director Emeritus by NYTHA in 2018 after deciding not to seek reelection at the end of his last term. Violette’s focus is now back to training horses full-time. His recent success Diversify, winner of the 2017 Jockey Club Gold Cup and 2018 Suburban at Belmont, is expected to compete in the Woodward at Saratoga.

Ray Handal spent ten years working for and learning from trainers who have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, and other Grade 1 races before making the jump to establish his own operation in 2013. Since going out on his own, the level at which he and his horses compete and their success at those levels has steadily increased, as evident by the earnings amassed by his trainees. In the summer of 2017, Handal took a small string of horses to one of the most competitive and prestigious meets in the world, Saratoga Race Course. From just 22 starters, he had three winners, four seconds, and four thirds. In addition to training, he has developed a keen eye in recognizing potential talent and the ability to claim horses and race them competitively at higher levels. Handal won two races at Saratoga on Monday.

Dylan Davis, who comes from a New York racing family, is currently riding in Saratoga. His father is retired jockey Robbie Davis, and his sisters, Jaqueline and Katie, are also jockeys. Davis’s first winner was Soldier Sam at Suffolk Downs on September 19, 2012. Since, his notable New York stakes wins include: Dancin Renee with Wonderment in 2017; New York Sire Stakes with Mr. Sinatra in 2017; Sleepy Hollow with Pat On the Back 2016; Ladies with Divided Attention in 2015.
