Kroy Prevails in Three-Horse Photo in Friday Feature
Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Grows to $38,000
Weekend Mischief Seeks 3rd Straight in Saturday’s Barely Even
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Making his first start on turf since finishing second in the Dec. 26 Mathis Brothers Mile (G2) at Santa Anita, Kroy prevailed in a three-horse photo finish for the win in Friday’s featured fourth race at Gulfstream Park.
The 4-year-old gelded son of The Factor went right to the front after the start in optional claiming allowance at a mile on turf under Emisael Jaramillo, setting fractions of 22.24 (seconds), 48.07 and 1:11.19 while showing the way into the stretch. One of a Kind, who tracked the early pace while saving ground under Reylu Gutierrez, and Galleon Mast, who trailed the seven-horse field early under Miguel Vasquez, kicked in with late surges to force the three-horse photo.
Kroy, the 9-5 second choice, was all out to hold off his rivals to claim victory by a nose over One of a Kind, who finished another nose ahead of 6-5 favorite Galleon Mast. The Armando De La Cerda-trained Kroy ran a mile in 1:35.08 over a course labeled firm.
“He likes a firmer turf. The turf today was a little softer than he likes,” De La Cerda said. “He got a little tired. He hasn’t run for two months.”
Kroy made his 2018 debut on Gulfstream’s main track May 12 in the seven-furlong Big Drama, in which he set the pace before settling for second behind multiple-stakes winner Mr. Jordan. His start was taken off the turf June 12, when he finished third in an optional claiming allowance.
“He needed this race. Now we can take him anywhere,” said De La Cerda, mentioning Santa Anita and Kentucky Downs as possible venues for Kroy’s next start.
Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Grows to $38,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the third-straight program Friday at Gulfstream Park, leaving a carryover jackpot of $38,015.07 for Saturday’s 12-race program (First-race post time: 12:45 p.m.).
Multiple tickets with all six winners Friday were each worth $4,126.18.
There will also be a Super Hi 5 carryover of $2,620.26.
The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners.
On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
The popular multi-race wager was solved three times within six racing days for jackpots of $734.403 (Aug. 3), $44,678 (Aug. 9) and $60,708 (Aug. 11).
Saturday’s six-race sequence will span Races 7-12, including the $75,000 Barely Even Stakes carded as Race 11.
Weekend Mischief is slated to seek her third straight victory in the mile stakes for fillies and mare that haven’t won a sweepstakes. The Stanley Gold-trained 3-year-old filly, who has won going away in back-to-back one-turn mile races, will be ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez.
Spanish Harlem, who finished off the board in the Princess Rooney (G2) last time out; My Cousin Martha, a stakes-placed 4-year-old who came up just short of victory at seven furlongs last time out; and Oola Gal, who stretches out to a mile after registering wo-off-the pace sprint victories from her last three starts; are also entered to seek their first stakes victories.
Leading rider Tyler Gaffalione won’t be a force at Gulfstream Park over the weekend. The 23-year-old rising star started a three-day riding venture at Del Mar Friday. He had two mounts at the San Diego area track Friday and is scheduled to ride eight horses there Saturday, as well as riding three races Sunday.
