HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Dropping from Grade 2 company, Spanish Harlem broke through to score her first stakes victory in Saturday’s $75,000 Barely Even Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
The 4-year-old daughter of More Than Ready, who finished sixth in the June 30 Princess Rooney (G2) on the Summit of Speed program, took advantage of a dream trip under Emisael Jaramillo to register a 1 ½-length victory in the one-turn mile race for fillies and mares that hadn’t won a sweepstakes.
“I thought she was going to run big today,” said Armando De La Cerda, who trains Spanish Harlem for Midwest Thoroughbreds Inc. “Last time I thought she would run big but she ran too close to a quick pace.”
Spanish Harlem, who sold for $370,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September Sale, rated kindly behind a fast early pace, contested by longshots Magalie, Motivate and Faith and Hope, along the backstretch,. After early fractions of 23.43 and 45.88 for the first half mile, Jaramillo swung Spanish Harlem to the outside, and the 6-5 favorite surged past the tiring pacesetters to take the lead on the turn into the homestretch and drew off.
Spanish Harlem ran a mile in 1:36.25 while prevailing over a late-running Oola Gal, a 7-1 shot ridden by Nik Juarez. My Cousin Martha finished third after making a belated rally.
After being transferred to De La Cerda, Spanish Harlem finished second in the Cellars Shiraz Stakes over Gulfstream Park West’s turf course last fall. Two starts later, she came off a two-month layoff to score a six-length optional claiming allowance win Gulfstream’s main track May 10. She was fourth in the Christmas Past Stakes over Gulfstream’s turf course May 31 before trying graded-stakes company in the Princess Rooney.
Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Climbs to $56,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the fourth straight program Saturday at Gulfstream Park, generating a carryover jackpot of $56,050.62 for Sunday’s 12-race card (First-race post time: 12:45 p.m.).
Multiple tickets with all six winners Saturday were each worth $1,733.22.
There will also be a Super Hi 5 carryover of $4,748.86.
The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
The popular multi-race wager was solved three times within six racing days this month for jackpots of $734.403 (Aug. 3), $44,678 (Aug. 9) and $60,708 (Aug. 11).
Sunday’s six-race sequence will span Races 7-12, including the $75,000 Jupiter Beach carded as Race 11.
High Hours, the only stakes winner in the field, will seek his first victory in the U.S. in the five-furlong turf sprint for non-winners of a sweepstakes in 2018. The Ralph Nicks-trained 7-year-old gelding is a Group 3 stakes winner and is multiple Group 1 stakes placed in Brazil. High Hours has raced four times in the U.S., including a third-place finish in the Umphrey Turf Sprint at Gulfstream in his most recent start.
Nicks is also scheduled to saddle Sighted, a lightly raced 3-year-old who is slated to make his turf debut after winning two of his three career starts.
Diddley, who finished second in the Umphrey, and Starship Wildcat, who has been first or second in 25 of 49 career starts, are rated 1-2 in the morning line at 5-2 and 3-1, respectively. High Hours is rated third at 7-2.
