Who:
Chad Brown is en route to another leading trainer title at Saratoga. In his Saratoga debut in 2008, Brown won with Star Player, the very first horse that he entered in the first race on opening day. Major career victories include the 2017 Preakness with Cloud Computing; the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with Maram, in his first season as a full-fledge trainer; and the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with Zagora, an Eclipse Award Champion Grass Mare. Brown would continue his Breeders’ Cup success with multiple victories in 2014 and 2015—the Juvenile Fillies Turf (Lady Eli); the Turf Sprint (Bobby’s Kitten); the Filly & Mare Turf (Dayatthespa); the Filly & Mare Turf, two years in a row with Stephanie’s Kitten; and his first Breeders’ Cup on dirt with Wavell Avenue in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Brown was the Eclipse Award’s Outstanding Trainer in back-to-back years, 2016 and 2017. He capped off an outstanding 2016 by ranking first in earnings amongst North American trainers and a career-best 12 G1s including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (New Money Honey) and Sword Dancer (Flintshire). He has also dominated the NYRA circuit with consecutive training titles in the past three years.
Ron Paolucci, owner of Loooch Racing Stable, will be running Dalmore and Imperative in this weekend’s Woodward. He was introduced to racing by his grandfather when he was a child. Paolucci entered horse ownership in 2011 and currently owns more than 150 of horses. His best racehorse to date is Ria Antonia, a filly who was placed first in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and finished second in a pair of other G1 races. Loooch also co-owns War Story, a gelding who has placed in multiple graded stakes. Paolucci, who was the second-leading owner by wins nationally last year with 132, considered leaving racing earlier this season but after much urging will not make a final decision until after the Breeders’ Cup.
Anthony Stabile is an analyst on NYRA’s “Talking Horses” with Andy Serling and the Horse Racing Radio Network. Stabile was raised on the race track—his parents met at Aqueduct, he worked as a hotwalker, groom and jockey agent at the NYRA tracks throughout high school and college before becoming a writer and handicapper for the New York Post in May 1999. At the Post, Anthony handicapped six or seven tracks a day, covered both the Thoroughbred and harness scenes and shattered all public handicapping records by showing an $88 profit at the 1999 Saratoga meet, his first as a public handicapper. Anthony has contributed to both the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup editions of The Bloodhorse, was co-host of “Thoroughbred Central” for the New York City OTB Television Network, hosts seminars for some of racings’ biggest days throughout the New York City area and is the Virtual Race Track announcer at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Anthony is best known for selecting the New York bred gelding Funny Cide to win the 2003 Kentucky Derby at 12-1. Anthony had “the gutsy gelding” at 150-1 in a Vegas future book as well as in all three Kentucky Derby Future Pools. Anthony was the ghost writer for Funny Cide in a series of columns that appeared in the Post and authored “Through the Binocs,” a daily recap of the day’s action at NYRA racetracks.
Chris Kay is the Chief Executive Officer and President of the New York Racing Association, the operator of Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of racing Triple Crown; Saratoga Race Course, home of the longest and most prestigious racing meet in the country; and Aqueduct Racetrack. NYRA is one of the largest thoroughbred horse racing organizations in the U.S. and is the cornerstone of New York State’s horse racing industry, which is responsible for more than $2.1 billion in annual economic impact and more than 17,000 jobs. As CEO and President since 2013, Kay has led NYRA in its efforts to create a stronger financial and business foundation. Prior to his arrival, NYRA had not generated an operating profit for several years. In the first three full fiscal years of Kay’s administration, NYRA not only generated profits, but did so for the first time in consecutive years since 1993 and 1994. Under Kay’s direction, NYRA has enhanced the quality of racing and the guest experience; improved equine safety, embarked on a multi-year program of capital improvements on the backstretch of all three tracks, took the NYRA Bets wagering platform nationwide, and greatly expanded and improved its television package.
