EDDIE HASKELL SET FOR CALIFORNIA FLAG HANDICAP
Mark Glatt felt Eddie Haskell had considerable upside when he claimed him for $50,000 last April 26, and it wasn’t because he wanted to prevent him from hassling The Beaver.
The five-year-old gelded son of the diverse sire Square Eddie was already stakes placed, had a consistent turf record and is a California-bred, enough for Glatt to take the bay for owners Phil Wood and Jim Hailey.
Eddie Haskell will make his third start for his new connections Saturday in the $100,000 California Flag Handicap at five furlongs on turf. He won his last under those conditions at Del Mar on Aug. 2, and was third in the restricted Albany Stakes at five furlongs on turf at Golden Gate Fields on June 9.
“I claimed him because he was coming off a long layoff and he was a horse I always liked,” Glatt said. “It’s hard to find horses to claim and I felt if he was OK, he still had two-other-than conditions, he’s a Cal-bred and he was worth taking.”
The California Flag, race five of nine with a 12:30 p.m. first post time: Tribalist, Gary Stevens; P Club, Evin Roman; Mason B, Brayan Pena; Richard’s Boy, Flavien Prat; Eddie Haskell, Geovanni Franco; and Brandothebartender, Joe Talamo.

YOUNG TRAINER’S PASSION LEADS TO SUCCESS
Andrew Lerner hopes to enhance his record of 40 percent winners this meet when he runs Powder, 2-1 on the morning line, in today’s seventh race.
The 29-year-old trainer captured Sunday’s third race with If You Like It, giving him two wins from five starts through 11 days at Santa Anita’s 22-day Autumn Meet.
“Each horse is owned by Jason Bailey and John Andersen, who campaign as Vindicate Racing,” Lerner said. “They got into the game and started to claim a lot of horses. Powder is probably the 10th horse they’ve claimed with me and we’ve had a lot of success.
“Powder is one of the barn favorites. She’s a sweet horse but when she gets out there, she’s all business, so we’re looking forward to her race today. We’ve won two races in a row for Vindicate so we’re excited about that, and we have Fire to the Wire going Saturday as well.
“We have a great team, including Larry Benavidez (long-time assistant to John Sadler), we love racing and want to keep bringing in people who have the same passion.”

JACK KARLIK: REST IN PEACE, SID
Two dozen friends and cohorts of Jack Karlik bid a final farewell Tuesday to the Runyonesque race track character who died at 85 on Oct. 7.
There were more sobriquets than sobs heard in the straightforward service at Groman Eden Chapel in Mission Hills, after which Karlik was interred in the appropriately named Court of Prophets.
Karlik, you see, was a prophet of sorts throughout his career as a handicapper, poring painstakingly over past performances in search of a winner for his legion of newspaper followers.
He reveled in the joy of victory. Defeat brought him only tzuris.
Karlik was not easily befriended. One had to earn his trust and respect before he would lower the moat and allow someone to enter his comfort zone.
Once penetrating his inner sanctum, however, he would beckon you with a given nickname, often that of “Sid,” a common first name for Jewish males, short for Sidney.
Political correctness be damned, as was his wont, Karlik made everyone a Hebrew. Shalom!
Damon Runyon created race track characters such as Nicely-Nicely, Harry the Horse and Benny Southstreet in his classic, “Guys and Dolls.” Jack Karlik, aka “The Dean,” would have been an appropriate cast member.
Following the service and interment, a delightful and delicious lunch was served at The Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills.
During the repast, fond, funny and fairly forgotten memories came to the fore. Laughter obliterated mourning. Truly, this was a celebration of life.
Karlik’s friend to the end and longtime Pasadena Star-News colleague, Eric Mandel, deserves everlasting gratitude for coordinating both the service and the luncheon, but more importantly for the unobtrusive and devoted care rendered during Jack’s declining years.
Jack’s career was his life, and as it withered, so did he.
Karlik might have faltered towards the finish line, but he went out a winner, and now the race is official.
Rest in peace, Sid.

SANTA ANITA RAINBOW PICK SIX JACKPOT CARRYOVER OF $512,056
Santa Anita’s popular 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot remained elusive Sunday, as there were 31 winning tickets with all six winning horses on top, resulting in a Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot carryover of $512,056 into Thursday’s eight-race Sunday, there was $268,348 in “new money” bet into the Rainbow Six, resulting in a total Jackpot pool of $718,967. With 31 winning tickets, each was worth $4,624.30.
Thursday’s third race, which has an approximate post time of 2 p.m. PT, is leg one in the Rainbow Six and is a maiden $20,000 claiming event for fillies and mares at a flat mile on the main track.

FINISH LINES: Indygo Bo, 6-1 chance on Jon White’s morning line in today’s second race, has been claimed from eight of his last 12 races and six of his last seven. The six-year-old Arkansas-bred gelding has a 7-6-6 record from 35 starts. Simon Callaghan talks True Validity and Moonshine Memories (video).
