Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Rises to $51,399
Gran Malbec Rallies for Sixth Straight Victory
MIAMI GARDENS, FL – The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the fifth consecutive racing day Friday at Gulfstream Park, producing a $51,399.67 carryover jackpot for Saturday’s 10-race program.
Tickets with all six winners Friday were each worth $11,155.72.
The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
The popular multi-race wager was last solved Nov. 9 for a $71,152.16 jackpot payoff.
Gran Malbec Rallies for Sixth Straight Victory
Granpollo Stables’ Gran Malbec captured his sixth straight victory in Friday’s featured seventh race at Gulfstream Park West. The 3-year-old colt, who had registered five front-running victories in a row, had to rally through the stretch to prevail by three-quarters of a length in the $47,000 optional claiming allowance.
The Victor Barboza Jr.-trained Gran Malbec has outrun a modest pedigree during his streak. The Florida-bred 3-year-old colt was sired by Bucket Head, a son of Rocket Cat who won four of 30 career starts and $70,000 in earnings.
Gran Malbec, the 5-2 second choice who ran five furlongs on turf in 58.20 seconds under Emisael Jaramillo, began his winning streak by winning a $12,500 maiden claiming event at Gulfstream in his third career start May 11. All six victories have come at the five-furlong distance on turf.
Claiming Crown Draws Record 346 Nominations
Nine-Stakes Program Launches Championship Meet at Gulfstream Saturday, Dec. 1
A record 346 horses have been nominated for the 20th renewal of the $1.11 Claiming Crown, to be held Saturday, Dec. 1 on the Opening Day of Gulfstream Park’s 2018-2019 Championship Meet.
There were a record amount of nominations in the $200,000 Jewel (39), $110,000 Distaff Dash (33), $110,000 Rapid Transit (42) and $110,000 Iron Horse (34). Trainer Jorge Navarro nominated nine to the Rapid Transit and five to the Iron Horse. Both Navarro and Mike Maker nominated five each to the $125,000 Emerald. Maker is the leading trainer with 16 Claiming Crown victories.
Other horsemen nominating to the Claiming Crown include Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott, Jason Servis, Rudy Rodriguez, Michael Stidham, Kathleen O’Connell, John Servis, Mary Eppler, Eddie Kenneally, Kelly Breen, Jane Cibelli, Robertino Diodoro and Victor Barboza Jr.
World of Trouble, second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) and third in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3), is nominated for the $200,000 Jewel. Starship Jubilee, winner of the Canadian (G2) and fourth in the E.P. Taylor (G1), is nominated for the $125,000 Tiara. Twocubanbrothersu will attempt to defend his title in the Iron Horse.
“The response from horsemen for the 20th Claiming Crown has been remarkable,” said Gulfstream General Manager Bill Badgett. “We’re looking forward to once again playing host to this great event. It’s a wonderful way to kick off a very special Championship Meet here at Gulfstream Park.”
This will mark the seventh consecutive year Gulfstream Park plays host to the Claiming Crown. It was announced in September that the Claiming Crown would remain at Gulfstream through 2021. The event has seen unprecedented growth since coming to Gulfstream with handle growing from $8.8 million to last year’s record $11.925 million.
The nine stakes, highlighted by the Jewel, comprise an event created in 1999 to honor the blue-collar horses that are the foundation of the racing industry nationwide. The less-heralded horses and horsemen, some of the most popular in the sport, are given a chance to run for larger purses and recognition.
