HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Multiple graded-stakes winner X Y Jet breezed five furlongs Saturday morning for a planned start in the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Jan. 19 at Gulfstream Park.

The popular 7-year-old gray gelding broke from the starting gate under Emisael Jaramillo and covered the distance in 1:00 at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream Park’s satellite training center in Palm Beach County.

“We’re very happy, very happy. He’s a horse, when you want to do something with him, you have to make sure that everything goes right with him. Today, he had a super workout – a minute flat from the gate,” trainer Jorge Navarro said. “He came back great. Cooled out quick. He cooled out within 15 minutes.”

X Y Jet hasn’t run since winning the $250,000 Smile Sprint (G3) by 2 ½ lengths at Gulfstream on the June 30 Summit of Speed program.

Navarro had hoped to run X Y Jet in the Nov. 3 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Churchill Downs but, unhappy with the way he came out of his final workout, ruled him out of the race the day before entries were to be taken.

“There is no doubt that he’s very fragile. You have to be very careful with him and keep him happy. I’ve had him so long, I know when he wants to do something and he lets me know ‘Jorge slow down with me,’” Navarro said. “Everything with X Y Jet is about details. You have to pay attention to him. The main thing is keeping him happy, and right now, he’s very, very happy.”

Navarro hopes the six-furlong Sunshine Millions Sprint, won by X Y Jet in 2016 and 2018, will serve as a springboard for a start in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1), a race in which the son of Kantharos has finished second twice.

“This was our main workout today. Next week, we’ll do something nice and easy. We’re looking forward to the Sunshine Millions. The work today, I think will get him to that race,” Navarro said. “Then, we’ll look around, give him another 45 days and look around for another spot and then we’ll try Dubai for a third time. Maybe this is the one.”

X Y Jet, owned by Gelfenstein Farm and Rockingham Ranch, has won 10 of 22 starts and more than $1.5 million in purses.

Eclipse Award Finalists Announced at Gulfstream

The finalists for the 2018 Eclipse Awards were announced Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where the Horse of the Year and the winners of 16 other categories will be revealed at the 48th annual Eclipse Awards dinner in Gulfstream’s Sport of Kings facility Jan. 24.

Gun Runner was named 2017 Horse of the Year at last year’s Eclipse Awards dinner at Gulfstream, two days before he won the $16 million Pegasus World Cup (G1). Gun Runner, who was retired to stud following his Pegasus win, is a finalist in the Older Dirt Male category, along with Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Accelerate and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) victor City of Light.

Accelerate, who is a finalist for 2018 Horse of the Year along with Triple Crown champion Justify and Monomoy Girl, and City of Light are scheduled to run in this year’s Jan. 26 Pegasus World Cup.

Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Stands at $40,567

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Saturday, one day after the popular multi-race wager produced a $166,317 jackpot payoff at Gulfstream Park.

Multiple ticket with all six winners paid $47,328.52. A carryover jackpot awaits Rainbow 6 bettors Sunday of $40,567.32.

The popular multi-race wager had not been solved for three racing days. After going unsolved for the first 12 programs of the 2018-2019 Championship Meet, there have been four jackpots paid out. The popular multi-race wager was also solved Dec. 19 for a $580,349.19 jackpot, Dec. 27 for $288,350.74 and again Dec. 30 for $177,317.98.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
There will also be a Super Hi 5 carryover Sunday of $20,634.70.

Who’s Hot: Luis Saez added three more wins to his Championship Meet-leading total, scoring aboard Song of Melody ($3.60) in Race 1, Global Campaign ($4.20) in Race 3, and undefeated Fancy Dress Party ($3.80) in the $75,000 Glitter Woman in Race 7.

Trainer Dale Romans saddled the 2000th winner of his career Saturday, visiting the winner’s circle with Caroline Lois ($11.60) in Race 4.
