HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Gulfstream Park’s Championship Meet, home of the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1) and Fountain of Youth (G2), continued its tradition of producing 3-year-old classic champions and stars over the weekend at Churchill Downs.
The first two official finishers in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (G1) – as well as the disqualified winner – all raced over the winter during Gulfstream’s Championship Meet, also home to the Pegasus World Cup Championship Invitational Series (G1), Holy Bull (G2), Claiming Crown and Clasico Internacional del Caribe.
Country House, placed first in the Derby, began his 3-year-old season by breaking his maiden Jan. 1 at Gulfstream while runner-up Code of Honor won the Fountain of Youth and finished third in the Florida Derby (G1). Florida Derby winner Maximum Security crossed the finish line first in the Kentucky Derby but was disqualified for interference.
Other Kentucky Derby starters who raced at Gulfstream were Cutting Humor (10th), Vekoma, (12th), Florida Derby runner-up Bodexpress (13th) and Spinoff (18th).
Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) winner Bricks and Mortar won the Old Forester Turf Classic (G1) ahead of Fort Lauderdale (G2) runner-up Qurbaan over the weekend at Churchill Downs and Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint winner World of Trouble won the Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G2).
“Gulfstream’s Championship Meet has a tradition of playing host to the world’s best racing as well as producing classic champions and graded-stakes winners throughout the entire year,” said Gulfstream’s General Manager Bill Badgett. “We want to congratulate all the connections who participated at Churchill Downs over the weekend and who will participate in Preakness Weekend at Pimlico next week.
“With our racing calendar continuing to grow at Gulfstream, we’re also seeing many of our horses who race here in the spring and summer going on to great success across North America. We’re excited to see what graded-stakes winners emerge come June 29 with our Summit of Speed and the $1.4 million Florida Sire Stakes beginning in August.”
Thursday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover $817,189
Gulfstream’s Rainbow 6 is expected to top $1 million Thursday as the 20-cent wager will have a carryover of $817,189.50.
Entering Thursday’s 10-race program, the Rainbow 6 has gone unsolved for 21 consecutive racing days.
The Rainbow 6 kicks off Thursday with the fifth race, a 7 ½ furlong turf event for fillies and mares. The sequence also includes four other turf races and a 4 ½ furlong event for 2-year-old fillies.
First race post is 1:15 p.m.
The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
