BALTIMORE – The 144th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1) set an all-time total handle record Saturday of $99,852,653.
Saturday’s record handle topped the previous mark of $97,168,658 set in 2017. Attendance was 131,256.
War of Will, who was placed seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1) May 4 after a troubled trip, carried jockey Tyler Gaffalione and trainer Mark Casse to their first victories in a Triple Crown event. The 14-race card was also highlighted by Catholic Boy winning $250,000 Dixie (G2), Lexitonian winning the $200,000 Chick Lang (G3) and Mitchell Road winning the $150,000 Gallorette (G3).
“The 144th Preakness Stakes surpassed our expectations thanks to the horsemen and fans who came to celebrate this grand Maryland tradition,” said Belinda Stronach, Chairman and President. “It makes for an unforgettable day of entertainment when you combine the world’s top performers with the best Thoroughbred horses and jockeys at one of the most celebrated sporting events. The Preakness is second to none.”
