TVG BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE PRE-ENTRANT MAXFIELD
WORKS HALF-MILE IN :47.80

Godolphin’s homebred undefeated Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) winner Maxfield impressed his connections Friday morning when he breezed a half-mile on a fast dirt track in :47.80. Pre-entered in the $2 million TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Nov. 1, the Street Sense colt is scheduled to leave Saturday for Santa Anita.

Maxfield, ridden by exercise rider Paul Madden, worked in company with Corkman at 7:30 a.m. Keeneland clockers caught Maxfield in fractions of :12.60, :24.80, :36.40, :47.80 and out 5 furlongs in :59. (Click here for a video of the work.)

“That was great,” trainer Brendan Walsh said. “He picked up really well, which is what we wanted. We wanted him to finish up the last quarter nice and sharp. He did. He came back and looks like he was just out galloping. He’s fit, and he’s ready to go. Everything’s gone according to plan, so hopefully we’ll get out there in good shape and have a good week, and I’m sure he’ll be ready to go next Friday.”

Walsh said he gave Maxfield a workmate because, ‘I wanted to have him go by something, pump him with as much confidence as we can.”

Now the next target is Southern California.

“He should travel good. He’s a very laid-back horse,” Walsh said. “We’ll probably just give him a little jog on Sunday morning or shedrow him. Then we’ll gallop him for the rest of the week. We’ll keep him happy and just get him there nice and fresh on Friday and hope for the best.”

Walsh has a second Breeders’ Cup pre-entrant, Qatar Racing Limited, Marc Detampel and Bottle Rocket Stable’s Vitalogy (GB) (Juvenile Turf-G1). The 2-year-old colt by No Nay Never was second in the Oct. 6 Dixiana Bourbon (G3) at Keeneland.
On Friday, Vitalogy breezed a half-mile on the turf course labeled firm in :51.20. (Click here for a video of the work.)

ABSCOND HAS FINAL TUNEUP FOR BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF

Apogee Bloodstock and Mike Anderson Racing’s Abscond, pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Santa Anita on Nov. 1, had her final breeze for the race on the Keeneland dirt just after 9 a.m. Friday.

With exercise rider Damien Rock in the saddle for trainer Eddie Kenneally, Abscond clocked the half-mile in 48.80 and galloped out 5 furlongs in 1:02. (Click here for a video of the work.)
“She worked super and is coming into the race perfectly,” Kenneally said. “We have been breezing her on the dirt at Keeneland (since spring), and she has been doing so well that we didn’t want to change anything. Seven days out is good timing.”

Abscond is scheduled to leave for Santa Anita on a 4:30 a.m. flight from Louisville on Saturday. She will return to Keeneland for the November Breeding Stock Sale in which she is Hip 1004 in the Nov. 8 session and cataloged as a racing prospect.

Kenneally said the daughter of Blame gave indications that she would be a superior runner before winning her career debut on July 21 at Ellis Park.

“It was her demeanor, her action and professional attitude with everything she does, and sure enough she went out and won her first race like a professional,” he said. “She showed us she has the right mind for the game.”

In her second start, Abscond was runner-up in the Bolton Landing at Saratoga to Kimari, who won Keeneland’s Indian Summer was pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1). Abscond then became a Grade 1 winner with her game victory in the Natalma at Woodbine on Sept. 15.

ARNOLD WORKS BREEDERS’ CUP HOPEFULS

Trainer Rusty Arnold on Friday morning worked his two pre-entrants for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita: Leinster and Totally Boss.

Owned by Amy Dunne, Westrock Stables, Brenda Miley and Jean Wilkinson, Leinster covered a half-mile in :50.80 on the turf course labeled firm. (Click here for a video of the work.) The 4-year-old Majestic Warrior colt was second in Keeneland’s Woodford (G2) Presented by Keeneland Select on Oct. 5.

At 5:45 a.m, Jim and Susan Hill’s Totally Boss worked a half-mile on a fast dirt track in :49.40. Keeneland clockers had the Runhappy Turf Sprint (G3) winner in fractions of :13.80, :25.60, :37.60, :49.40 and out 5 furlongs in 1:01.80.

Arnold also worked Calumet Farm’s Gear Jockey, pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). Third in the Oct. 6 Dixiana Bourbon (G3) at Keeneland, the 2-year-old son of Twirling Candy was timed in 1:01 for 5 furlongs on dirt.
They are scheduled to leave for Santa Anita on Monday.

GALLOPING OUT

Jockey Luan Machado earned his first Keeneland victory Thursday when he rode Go-To-Toga Racing’s High Risk Strategy to win the second race. Trained by Eduardo Caramori, the 4-year-old Union Rags gelding captured the 1 1/16-mile race by 2¾ lengths in 1:52.61.

The Keeneland Library Presents “A Day in the Life: Volume I” – This new exhibit features the work of early Turf photographer John C. Hemment. The Keeneland Library is home to the largest known surviving body of work of Hemment, a photographer during the late 19th and early 20th century. A virtual counterpart of the Hemment exhibit is at keenelandlibrary.omeka.net/exhibits. Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the Library is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.

The Hill – Keeneland’s official tailgate lot features a jumbo screen to watch live racing and football, wagering booths, live music, local food trucks and free shuttles to the Grandstand.
Saturday, Oct. 26 – Closing Day

Special Halloween Edition Sunrise Trackside – Families, out-of-town guests, longtime Keeneland fans and others will enjoy spending a morning at the track before the races begin. Watch racehorses train over the track and enjoy Breakfast With the Works and trackside commentary (7-8:30 a.m.); children’s activities in the Kids Club Corner (7:30-9:30 a.m.); free guided tours of the grounds (7:30-10 a.m.) and a demonstration by Locust Trace AgriScience Center.

Children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes to the track. Buckles, the Keeneland Kids Club mascot, will award Kids Club prize packages to some of the best costumes. Children will enjoy special Halloween activities and have a chance to collect candy. The Headless Horseman will appear in the Paddock at approximately 9:15 a.m. and on the track during the race day.

Jockey Q&A with Tyler Gaffalione in the Paddock at 12:05 p.m.
