OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Barry Ostrager’s Crimson Frost is on a quest for more graded stakes black type when she takes on four stakes winners in Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Turnback the Alarm over the main track at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Trained by Michelle Nevin, the 5-year-old daughter of Stormy Atlantic was beaten 8 ½ lengths to multiple Grade 1-winner Midnight Bisou in the Grade 2 Beldame Invitational on September 28 at Belmont Park, which was her first start against graded stakes company. The seasoned veteran of 26 starts won a stake two starts back when taking the Bodacious Tatas over a sloppy Monmouth Park main track.
“I hope that she can put up another good effort on Saturday,” said Nevin, who claimed Crimson Frost for $62,500. “She had decent form which is why we claimed her. She’s a very straight forward mare and she’s been training well s hopefully we can get lucky. A wet track would be nice.”
Bred in Kentucky by Joe Mulholland, Jr., John Mulholland and Keith Desormeaux, Crimson Frost is out of the Horse Chestnut broodmare Rock Jasmine – a half-sister to multiple stakes winner on grass Awakino Cat.
Crimson Frost will break from post 3 under Harry Hernandez.
A record four-time winner of the Turnback the Alarm, trainer Todd Pletcher will send out a trio of fillies for the event, including Another Broad, whose only stakes triumph was in the Top Flight Invitational on April 13 at Aqueduct.
Owned by Madaket Stables in partnership with Elayne Stables and Brian Martin, the Maryland-bred daughter of Include was fourth in the Beldame last out beaten 9 ½ lengths.
Another Broad will be piloted by Eric Cancel from the inside post.
Mathis Stables’ Bellera will be making her stakes debut when breaking from post 4 under Jose Lezcano.
The bay sophomore daughter of Bernardini broke her maiden at second asking going 1 1/16 miles at Monmouth Park before defeating winners next out over a sloppy main track at Saratoga, where she registered a career-best 89 Beyer Speed Figure. She enters the race off of a narrow second to dual stakes placed Grandaria at Keeneland.
The final of Pletcher’s contingent is China Horse Club International’s Alberobello, who will attempt to make amends following a distant fifth against allowance company at Keeneland.
A winner of three starts, all over different surfaces, the daughter of Bernardini acquired black type in when running third two starts back in the Summer Colony at Saratoga, finishing 14 ½ lengths behind Grade 1 winner Blue Prize.
Bred in Kentucky by Bell Tower Thoroughbreds, Alberobello was a $475,000 purchase from the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is a sibling to four stakes winners.
Alberobello will emerge from post 7 and will receive the riding services of Dylan Davis.
Golden Award will be seeking her second graded stakes triumph when she breaks from post 6 under Junior Alvarado.
Owned by Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind Equine, the 4-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro and half-sister to 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another bested Grade 1 winners Wow Cat and She’s a Julie in the Grade 3 Shuvee this summer at the Spa before being eased in her last effort in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign.
A winner over four different surfaces, Golden Award will attempt to give Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his second win in the Turnback the Alarm after scoring the 2015 edition with Bobby Flay’s America.
Bred in Kentucky by Harvey A. Clarke, Golden Award is out of the Arch broodmare Arch’s Gal Edith.
Rounding out the field are Jeltrin [post 2, Luis Reyes], Moonlit Garden [post 5, Kendrick Carmouche], Zena Rules [post 8, Declan Carroll] and Gotham Gala [post 9, Daniel Centeno].
The Ozone Park oval will also host full simulcast coverage of the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday, highlighted by the Grade 1, $6 million Classic, with a locally scheduled post of 8:44 p.m. First post on Saturday’s 10-race card at the Big A is 12 p.m. Fans purchasing a Post Parade program on Saturday will receive a $5 cash card.
