UNDEFEATED TIZ THE LAW TOPS SATURDAY’S GRADE II, $300,000 KENTUCKY JOCKEY CLUB

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019) – Sakatoga Stables’ undefeated Grade I winner Tiz the Law will lead a field of nine promising 2-year-olds entered in Saturday’s $300,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) – the co-featured event on Saturday’s penultimate day of racing at the 2019 Fall Meet.

Billed as “Stars of Tomorrow II,” each of the 12 races on Saturday’s card are exclusively for 2-year-olds that may have aspirations of trail-blazing their way to next spring’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) and Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI).

The Kentucky Jockey Club – a “Prep Season” race on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” in which the Top 4 finishers will receive 10-4-2-1 points, respectively – goes as Race 11 at 5:56 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 1 p.m. The co-featured $300,000 Golden Rod (GII) for fillies is Race 9 at 4:57 p.m.

Tiz the Law, trained by veteran horseman Barclay Tagg, rallied from off the pace to score a four-length victory in the $500,000 Champagne (GI) nearly two months ago at Belmont Park. The son of Constitution arrived at Churchill Downs on Monday afternoon and made his first appearance on the track Wednesday for a light jog and schooled at the starting gate.

“He surprises us every day with what he has,” Tagg said. “It’s what we look for and hope for.”

Tiz the Law has the same connections as 2003 Kentucky Derby (GI) winner Funny Cide. Sakatoga Stable, a partnership group primarily based on the East Coast, is scheduled to have a large presence at Churchill Downs on Saturday with more than 50 people making the journey from New York, according to managing partner Jack Knowlton.

The New York-bred is tentatively scheduled to gallop Thursday and Friday at Churchill Downs. He is based in Barn 19.

Manny Franco will make the journey from his current base at Aqueduct for Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club. The duo will break from post position No. 3.

One of the main rivals to Tiz the Law in the Kentucky Jockey Club is Sagamore Farm’s $123,800 Street Sense winner South Bend, who will make his first start at a route of ground. Trained by Stan Hough, South Bend won at first asking on Sept. 14 at Churchill Downs after he rallied from more than eight lengths off the early pace to narrowly defeat highly-regarded colt Answer In. The bay colt by Algorithms won his next two starts, which included a first-level allowance win by a neck at Keeneland and a one-length score in the Street Sense, the local prep race for the Kentucky Jockey Club.

“He appears to be growing up and maturing,” Hough said.

South Bend will once again be ridden by Julien Leparoux from post 4.

Other entrants in the Kentucky Jockey Club include Walking L Thoroughbreds’ Street Sense runner-up Fighting Seabee and Ed and Susie Orr’s Street Sense third-place finisher Silver Prospector.

RAGS TO RICHES WINNER FINITE TOPS COMPETITIVE GOLDEN ROD – Winchell Thoroughbreds, Thomas Reiman, William Dickson and Deborah Easter’s impressive $123,859 Rags to Riches winner Finite tops a field of eight 2-year-old fillies that were entered in Saturday’s 76th running of the $300,000 Golden Rod (Grade II) at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile race is the co-headliner on the second-to-last of the 26-day Fall Meet. Billed as “Stars of Tomorrow II,” each of the 12 races is exclusively for 2-year-olds.

The Golden Rod – a “Prep Season” race on the “Road to the Kentucky Oaks” in which the Top 4 finishers will receive 10-4-2-1 points, respectively – goes as Race 9 at 4:57 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 1 p.m. The co-featured $300,000 Kentucky Jockey (GII), which attracted 14 colts and geldings, is Race 11 at 5:56 p.m.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Finite scored an impressive six-length win in the Rags to Riches under jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. The chestnut filly by Munnings broke her maiden two starts ago on the turf at Kentucky Downs. The Golden Rod will be Finite’s first test running at two turns. Santana will be in the saddle once again and the duo will break from the rail.

Chief among Finite’s rivals in the Golden Rod is Brereton Jones’ homebred Turtle Trax, who will test stakes company for the first time following an easy 2 ¾-length win one month ago in a first-level allowance contest. Trained by Ian Wilkes, Turtle Trax will be ridden by Julien Leparoux out of post position No. 2.

TOM’S d’ETAT MADE 8-5 MORNING LINE FAVORITE IN FRIDAY’S CLARK – G M B Racing’s $300,000 Fayette (GII) winner Tom’s d’Etat has been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite as he readies to take on 11 rivals in Friday’s 145th edition of the Grade I, $600,000 Clark Presented by Norton Healthcare.

The Clark heads a duo of stakes races on the 12-race “Black Friday” card on the day after Thanksgiving that is traditionally the most popular racing day Churchill Downs’ Fall Meet. The main event is scheduled as the 11th race at 5:56 p.m. (all times Eastern) on the Friday program that also features the 29th running of the $300,000 Mrs. Revere (GII) for 3-year-old fillies on turf. Post time for Friday’s first race is 1 p.m.

Trained by Al Stall Jr., the 6-year-old son of Smart Strike has been in top form since a nonplussed ninth-place effort in the $9 million Pegasus World Cup (GI) in late January at Gulfstream Park. Tom’s d’Etat’s 2019 campaign included a victory in the $100,000 Alydar Stakes at Saratoga, a runner-up effort in the $400,000 Alysheba (GII) and a third-place finish in the $600,000 Stephen Foster (GII) at Churchill Downs.

Among the rivals to Tom’s d’Etat in the Clark is Calumet Farm’s homebred Bravazo, who will be making his first start in 10 months after he finished fourth in the Pegasus World Cup.

“I don’t think the time off has hurt him a bit,” Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said. “I think he’ll come back as a stronger horse.”

Bravazo, a 4-year-old colt by Awesome Again, danced in nearly every dance during his 3-year-old campaign, including a narrow runner-up effort behind eventual Triple Crown winner Justify in the $1.5 million Preakness (GI) and a neck defeat in last year’s Clark. Luis Saez has the mount in the Clark and will break from post 10.

FIRST KENTUCKY DERBY FUTURE WAGER OF YEAR OPENS THURSDAY – Unbeaten Nashua Stakes (Grade III) winner Independence Hall and upset Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) winner Storm the Court are among the 24 betting interests in Pool 1 of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which kicks off a four-day run at Churchill Downs on Thanksgiving Day.

Both Independence Hall and Storm the Court were made 12-1 individual co-favorites on veteran odds maker Mike Battaglia’s morning line. The pari-mutuel field of “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” is expected to be the overall first-pool favorite for the 22nd consecutive year and Battaglia projects it to close as the 6-5 choice.

This marks the seventh consecutive year that Churchill Downs has hosted Future Wager pools in November on closing weekend of its Fall Meet. “All Other 3-Year-Olds” has won four of the last six years: California Chrome ($3.20 in 2014), Always Dreaming ($4.40 in 2017), Justify ($4.40) and Country House ($4.60). Go Google Yourself, who drew the outside post position No. 9, won the $200,000 Locust Grove (GIII) in late September for trainer Paul McGee.

“The outside post should be fine,” McGee said. “She has enough tactical speed that she’ll be able to use that to get position into the first turn.”

CHURCHILL DOWNS, FAIR GROUNDS TO OFFER ‘FLEUR DE LIS’ PICK 4 SATURDAY – For the second consecutive year, Churchill Downs Racetrack and Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will team to offer horseplayers a cross-track Pick 4 on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Billed as the “Fleur de Lis Pick 4,” bettors will be required to pick the winners of four races late Saturday afternoon: two races at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La. and two stakes events at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The minimum wager on the Fleur de Lis Pick 4 is 50 cents. Fair Grounds will serve as host of the wager.

The opening leg from Fair Grounds is a first-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on turf (an oversubscribed field of 14), while the third leg is the $75,000 Richard R. Scherer Memorial for fillies and mares at 5 ½ furlongs on the grass (an oversubscribed field of 12). The second and fourth legs from Churchill Downs are the Golden Rod and Kentucky Jockey Club.

The Fleur de Lis is a symbol that is deeply ingrained in the history of both Louisville and New Orleans and has traditionally been used to represent French royalty. The English translation for the French “fleur-de-lis” is flower of the lily.

MEET LEADERS – Perennial leading rider Corey Lanerie held a 28-22 win lead over 2018 Fall Meet champion jockey Tyler Gaffalione. Ricardo Santana Jr. held third with 19 wins while Julien Leparoux’s 18 victories and Brian Hernandez Jr.’s 14 wins rounded out the Top 5. … Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen held a 17-11 win margin over Brad Cox. Ian Wilkes was in third with eight wins followed by Peter Miller with seven and Tom Amoss and Mike Maker tied with six victories … Lothenbach Stables continued their march toward leading owner with a 6-4 win advantage over Calumet Farm and Sagamore Farm.

DOWN THE STRETCH – There was a $186,622 carryover in the 20-cent Single 6 Jackpot on Wednesday. First post is 1 p.m. The Single 6 sequence will span Races 5-10. … Thursday-Sunday at Churchill Downs will have 12 races.
