GULFSTREAM TODAY 1.16.20

Pool Guarantees to be Offered Pegasus World Cup Day Jan. 25

Late Pick 4 – $1 million; Late Pick 5 – $750,000

Friday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $3 Million

Vow to Recover Returns in Sunshine Millions F & M Turf

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Pool guarantees for the Late Pick 4 and the Leg Pick 5 will be offered on the Pegasus World Cup Championship Invitational Series presented by Runhappy program at Gulfstream Park Jan. 25.

The Late Pick 4, which will span the final four races on the program, will have a $1 million pool guarantee. The Late Pick 5, which will span the last five races on the card will offer a $750,000 pool guarantee. Both are 50 cent-base wagers.

The $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) and the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) will highlight a program that will feature nine stakes, six graded, worth $4.2 million in purses.

Friday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $3 Million

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot pool will be guaranteed at a live-changing $3 million for Friday’s program at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 34th consecutive racing day of the 2019-2020 Championship Meet at Gulfstream Thursday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $2484.62.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Vow to Recover Returns in Sunshine Millions F & M Turf

Imaginary Stables and Paul Braverman’s multiple-stakes winner Vow to Recover returns from a freshening to open her 4-year-old season in Saturday’s $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf at Gulfstream.

The 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for older fillies and mares will be one of four stakes for Florida-bred horses, including the $200,000 Classic, on Saturday’s Sunshine Millions program

It will be the first race for the daughter of Broken Vow since dueling for and taking a short lead into the stretch of the 7 ½-furlong Miss Gracie Stakes Sept. 14 at Gulfstream before weakening to sixth, beaten four lengths by Raki, who is also entered Saturday.

“After the last race, it was just a lot,” trainer Elizabeth Dobles said. “The whole 3-year-old campaign she really gave it her all, so we wanted to give her a break before the Championship Meet. We were hoping to get a race into her last month, but she wasn’t 100 percent ready for it, fitness-wise, so we decided to wait for this race.”

Listed at 20-1 on the morning line, Vow to Recover drew the far outside post in a field of 11 that includes Liza Star, entered for main track only. Paco Lopez is named to ride.

Vow to Recover’s lone victory in seven 2019 starts came over the Gulfstream turf in the Honey Ryder Stakes May 4, run at the Filly & Mare Turf distance of 1 1/16 miles. Beaten as the favorite in the one-mile Martha Washington July 6, she was shipped up to Saratoga where she ran fifth by 1 ½ lengths in the Lake Placid (G2).

Dobles has had Vow to Recover since her 2-year-old season, when she won two of four races including the Juvenile Fillies Turf for state-breds at Gulfstream Park West. She was also third behind subsequent Grade 3 winner A Bit Special in the 2018 Wait a While.

“Physically, she’s a lot more mature and, mentally, she puts her game on every time she’s out there. You can see her ears are just kind of wandering back and forth and then when a horse comes up next to her she just starts rolling,” Dobles said. “She’s a really good-looking horse, but I like how aggressive she is when a horse gets next to her.”

Lopez has been aboard for two of Vow to Recover’s three career wins. The filly has tuned up for her return with a string of steady works since late November at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County, including a bullet half-mile breeze over the turf in 49.40 Jan. 4, the fastest of 49 horses.

Grade 1 winner Starship Jubilee is the 1-2 program favorite to earn her third consecutive Sunshine Millions victory.

“I’m more worried about fitness with the time off,” Dobles said. “We take our time with her because she is a nice filly, so what I’m concerned about is if she is 100 percent fit for the race. This will give us good idea of where we go from here.”

Who’s Hot: Jairo Rendon rode three winners, scoring aboard Scatnap ($8.40) in Race 7 and Dr. Harlan ($10.20) in Race 9 after scoring an upset victory in Race 1 with Conquer ($67.80).

Tyler Gaffalione doubled aboard Queen Nekia ($4.20) in Race 3 and Dermot ($8.20) in Race 5. Luis Saez also doubled with Drop Kick ($12.60) in Race 6 and Kitten By the Sea ($7.80) in Race 10.
