This year’s Kentucky Derby trail continued its upset run to Louisville when Concert Tour was beaten as the odds-on favorite April 10 in the Arkansas Derby. After an early speed duel with Caddo River, both were run down late by 12-1 Super Stock. Caddo River edged back by Concert Tour right before the wire to grab second.
This last list before the May 1 Derby is not written in stone and I will get more serious in my column in the week leading up to the race.
Known Agenda had his running shoes on to take the Florida Derby.
Essential Quality won the Blue Grass but had to work to get by Highly Motivated. He’ll still be the Derby favorite, which makes it good for bettors.
Highly Motivated gets this spot because of his effort in the Blue Grass and that was after he was third in the Gotham.
Rock Your World did just that in upsetting the Santa Anita Derby. He’s unbeaten and it was his first try on dirt.
Hot Rod Charlie invaded Fair Grounds from California and walked off with Louisiana Derby crown.
Super Stock won the Arkansas Derby and has the points to go to the big dance.
Concert Tour disappointed at Arkansas; did trainer Bob Baffert have him totally cranked? The “silver fox” knows how to get horses to the Kentucky Derby and we’ll see what he does.
Medina Spirit looked flat in Santa Anita Derby. He’s probably still headed to Kentucky Derby.
Midnight Bourbon ran a very game second in the Louisiana Derby.
Soup and Sandwich ran a game second in the Florida Derby.
