MILLER LIKES DISTANCE FOR NONE ABOVE THE LAW

None Above the Law, who had been considered Triple Crown timber early this spring, has found his niche among his own kind and will tackle California-breds Saturday in the $150,000 Snow Chief Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

The gray son of the Japanese stallion Aragonite, a son of Bernstein, None Above the Law took no prisoners winning the restricted Alcatraz Stakes going a mile on turf at Golden Gate Fields on May 23.

“He should love the extra distance,” said Peter Miller, who trains the gelding for Downstream Racing, LLC. “The further, the better for him.”

Santa Anita’s leading rider Flavien Prat will be back aboard None Above the Law for the Snow Chief. He has ridden him three times previously, winning once.

Miller has enjoyed a typically successful meet, ranking second to Phil D’Amato in the race for leading trainer.

“It’s gone very well,” he said. “It’s been a really good meet. Our entire team has worked hard and done a great job.”

CECIL SET FOR MELAIR WITH SQUARE EDDIE FILLY

Eddie’s New Dream, a daughter of Square Eddie, stretches out to two turns in Saturday’s $150,000 Melair Stakes for three-year-old fillies at a mile and one-sixteenth.

The Melair is one in the lucrative Golden State Series for California-bred or sired runners.

“She ran well off the layoff last time,” said Ben Cecil, who trains the gray filly for owner/breeder Reddam Racing, LLC. “I think the extra distance should suit her.”

Eddie’s New Dream’s four races have all been sprints, her most recent a six-furlong overnight race in which she was second by a half-length May 9 at Santa Anita.

Prior to that, she was third, beaten only a head, in the seven-furlong Golden State Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar last Nov. 6. Mario Gutierrez, who has ridden Eddie’s New Dream in all her races, retains the mount.

“The great thing about the Square Eddies is they can run on any surface, long or short,” Cecil said. “Unfortunately, he’s not still breeding, but all his runners have done well. It’s very rare you get one that can’t run a bit.”

Cecil will not be at Santa Anita for the Melair. “I’m on vacation in the Caribbean,” he said by phone Sunday morning. “I’m enjoying the sunshine.”

PURSES INCREASED ON FASIG-TIPTON STAKES

Two closing-day juvenile stakes, the Fasig-Tipton Debutante and the Fasig-Tipton Futurity, offer purses of $100,000 each, up from the initial amount of $75,000.

Both races to be run this Sunday will be contested at five furlongs on Santa Anita’s main track and serve as a prelude to Fasig-Tipton’s two-year-old in training sale at Santa Anita.

The only North American two-year-old sale to be held on dirt in the month of June, the Fasig-Tipton sale will be conducted on June 23, with an under-tack preview on June 21.

“We boosted the purses on both races to $100,000 because we want to continue to provide tangible incentives for those owners and horsemen that are investing in our future,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary.

“We’ll have all of these sales horses on the grounds here during our final week of the meet and this is going to attract a great deal of interest.

“It’s important for everyone to know they can attend the sale, inspect the horses and have opportunities to race not only at Santa Anita in the fall, but at Los Alamitos and Del Mar as well.”

The Fasig-Tipton juvenile races are two of eight stakes presented on closing weekend.

The others are the Grade III San Juan Capistrano, the $150,000 Melair, the $150,000 Snow Chief and the $75,000 Siren Lure on Saturday, June 19, and on closing day Sunday the Grade III American Stakes and the Grade III Wilshire Stakes.

FINISH LINES: With four racing days remaining in the meet that ends next Sunday, Phil D’Amato leads Peter Miller in the race for leading trainer, 45-41, while it’s merely a matter of filling in the final numbers for Flavien Prat who holds a 115-84 advantage over runner-up Juan Hernandez . . . Morning Line Maker Jon White reports Brickyard Ride, a smashing four and three quarter length winner of yesterday’s $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes, earned a career best Beyer Speed figure 104…There were 158 recorded workouts Sunday, including a bullet four-furlong training track move of 59 flat for D’Amato trainee On Mars, nominated to Sunday’s $100,000 Wilshire Stakes at a mile on grass . . .
