HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Friday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $150,000 at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Thursday for the fifth racing day following a $461,035.47 jackpot payoff Oct. 9.
The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Friday’s Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-9, including a showdown of graded-stakes winners in Race 8, a mile optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Tonalist’s Shape will seek to rebound from a subpar performance in her first start on turf at Kentucky Downs, and Juan Alvarado-trained Cookie Dough is scheduled to make her first start in 13 months. Tonalist’s Shape won the Forward Gal (G3) and Davona Dale (G2) last year, while Cookie Dough, captured the 2020 Royal Delta (G3).
Luis Figueroa Rides 1st Winner Since Quitting in 2017
Comebacking Luis Figueroa returned to the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle for the first time in more than five years Thursday. The 26-year-old jockey, who quit riding in 2017, scored in his sixth mount back in Race 2 aboard Carlos Perez-trained Starship Mallomar ($7.20).
“It’s good to be back,” Figueroa said. “It feels great. I’m working for Carlos Perez – they’re great people – and they’ll give me a shot once in a while.”
Figueroa, who began riding in 2014, is the older brother of Heriberto Figueroa, who is currently riding in New Jersey and New York.
Later on Thursday’s program, jockey Marcos Meneses won on Pretty Rachel ($2.60) for the sixth consecutive race in Race 7. Armando De La Cerda-trained Pretty Rachel, who has won for three different trainers during her six-race streak, won by eight lengths while dropping from a 6 ¾-length victory in a $12,500 claiming company into a $6250 claiming race. The 3-year-old daughter of Dominus was claimed out of her victory by trainer Kent Sweezey.
Frontrunners Making Strides on Tapeta Surface
The fortunes of frontrunners on the Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park took a decided upturn during Week 3 of action on the newly installed all-weather track.
While only three horses won in front-running fashion in 37 races during the first two weeks, six frontrunners prevailed in the 15 races run on Tapeta during Week 3.
Handicappers also seem to be getting a handle on the all-weather racing. During Week 3, nine of 15 favorites were victorious.
