Father Glado Provides D’Angelo with a ‘First’

Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $300,000

Saffie Joseph Jr. Saddles Three Winners in a Row

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Pro Racing Stable LLC’s Father Glado provided trainer Jose D’Angelo with a career ‘first’ while graduating Thursday at Gulfstream Park.

“This is my first maiden special weight win in my life,” D’Angelo said. “I’ve run in Dubai; I’ve run in the Breeders’ Cup; I’ve run in the Preakness, but never have I won a maiden special weight race.”

D’Angelo, in his third year of training in the U.S. after venturing from Venezuela in 2019, enjoyed a Cinderella-type run last year with Jesus’ Team, a former $25,000 claimer who finished third in the 2020 Preakness (G1), second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), and second in this year’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream.

Father Glado, the 9-5 favorite in a field of eight 2-year-olds, rallied from off the pace to graduate by a nose in the mile-and-70-yard race on Tapeta. The son of Declaration of War was coming off a troubled fifth-place finish in his debut, in which he lost by only 1 ½ lengths after being blocked in the stretch on Tapeta.

“This is a very good horse. At first, he was slow in his training, but as soon as I put him on grass at Palm Meadows, I thought we had a really nice horse,” said D’Angelo, a former leading trainer in Venezuela who has saddled 58 winners from 349 starters in the U.S. “He’s going to be even better on turf.”

Father Glado was timed in 1:42.38, the fastest time for a mile and 70 yards recorded thus far on the Tapeta course.

Edward Seltzer’s Running Legacy ($7.80) graduated at first asking in Race 8, a mile-and-70-yard maiden special weight race for juvenile fillies on Tapeta. The homebred daughter of Gun Runner rallied to win by 1 ¼ lengths in 1:43.34, giving trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. three straight winners on Thursday’s card.

Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $300,000

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $300,000 at Gulfstream Park Friday after going unsolved for the fifth racing day in a row Thursday.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 4-9, including the Race 7 feature in which Grade 1 winner Drain the Clock and Nocturnal will clash. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Drain the Clock, who captured the Woody Stephens (G1) at Belmont in June, will return off a 3 ½-month layoff, while Nocturnal will make his first start since winning a Gulfstream optional claiming allowance in February.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Who’s Hot: Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. saddled three straight winners, Spectacular Gal ($4.40) in Race 6, Amazing Trip ($9.80) in Race 7 and Running Legacy ($7.80) in Race 8.

Jockey Edgard Zayas rode three winners, scoring aboard Buenisimo ($7.40) in Race 3, Spectacular Gal and Amazing Trip.
