BRICKYARD RIDE RETURNS IN SUNDAY’S GRADE III SAN SIMEON
Brickyard Ride, a seven-time stakes winner for trainer Craig Lewis, returns after more than nine months on the sidelines in Sunday’s Grade III San Simeon on the hillside turf course.
Brickyard Ride has been working towards his 6-year-old bow at Santa Anita since mid-December. While training has been disrupted at Santa Anita in recent weeks due to a series of storms, Lewis indicated it was not a major concern. Brickyard Ride’s last work came on Feb. 16.
“He’s been ready to run for a while,” Lewis said. “I would have got another work in him but he really doesn’t need it.”
Brickyard Ride is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a field of eight and will break from the inside stall under Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez.
Last year, Brickyard Ride won four-straight stakes including the Grade III Kona Gold at Santa Anita. After running fifth in the Grade II Triple Bend in May, the California-bred by Clubhouse Ride suffered a quarter crack during training and was sidelined the remainder of the year.
Brickyard Ride’s win streak last year also included a victory in the Sensational Star for statebreds in his only previous try over the hillside turf course. Lewis said Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas once told him that “a good place for a good horse to come back is down the hill. They don’t have to run as hard and as long.
“You have to start him somewhere and this seemed reasonable,” Lewis said.
The major goal for Brickyard Ride this season is to make a first appearance at the Breeders’ Cup, Lewis noted. This year’s Breeders’ Cup will be held at Santa Anita.
Brickyard Ride is campaigned by breeder Alfred Pais. He has banked $744,977 with a record of 12-1-2 from 23 starts.
The San Simeon goes as the fifth race on Sunday with an approximate post time of 2:31. The field in post position order: Brickyard Ride, Juan Hernandez (2-1); Sumter, Mike Smith (5-1); Count of Amazonia, John Velazquez (8-1); Whatmakessammyrun, Joe Bravo (5-1); Motorious, Flavien Prat (5-2); Respect the Code, Kent Desormeaux (8-1); Anarchist, Frankie Dettori (15-1); Mecklenburg, Ricardo Gonzalez (12-1).
TOP QUARTER HORSE TRAINER JONES GETS FIRST WIN AT SANTA ANITA
Paul Jones, one of the most successful quarter horse trainers in history, won for the first time at Santa Anita Saturday when Scatchmejamin went gate-to-wire in a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight for California-breds on dirt. She paid $40.40 for the upset.
Jones, who is based at Los Alamitos, is a 14-time AQHA champion trainer. Scatchmejamin was his first Thoroughbred winner since 2018, according to Equibase.
Scatchmejamin is by Power Jam out of the Scat Daddy mare Scatchmeifyoucan. She was bred in partnership by Jones and co-owner Ricky Overly.
As for the mating, Jones said he and Overly bought Scatchmeifyoucan to breed to Quarter Horses, which they did. But when Jones purchased an interest in the stallion Power Jam, a former runner for Bob Baffert, a mating with Scatchmeifyoucan was set in motion.
“Once we got a piece of Power Jam, we thought let’s breed a Thoroughbred,” Jones explained. “(Power Jam) had a ton of speed, he broke two track records, Scatchmeifyoucan had a lot of speed. We thought that would produce a horse with some speed so we ended up giving it a try.”
Jones is the all-time leader in career earnings among Quarter Horse trainers with more than $89 million. From Santa Anita’s Runhappy Winner’s Circle Saturday, Jones said he was open to the idea of training a string of Thoroughbreds.
“Give me about 20 horses and we’ll come over,” Jones said. “My thing is if I had the right clients and right horses, I would consider it. But without that it’s impossible.”
MANDATORY PAYOUT, LIKELY $3 MILLION POOL IN SATURDAY’S RAINBOW 6
With a mandatory payout in place, Santa Anita officials project Saturday’s 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot pool should approach $3 million by seventh race post time Saturday at Santa Anita. With no single-ticket winners on Friday, the sequence will have a $237,774.40 carryover.
The Rainbow Six is a 20-cent minimum wager where bettors are tasked with selecting the winner of six straight races. The bet begins at approximately 3:05 p.m. with the seventh race on a stakes laden 12-race card.
Before scratches, the average field size for the sequence was 9.8 starters per race. It consists of two allowance races on turf, a $40,000 maiden claimer for dirt sprinters, a starter allowance on dirt, and both the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile (turf) and Grade I Santa Anita Handicap presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino.
COAST-TO-COAST PICK 5 RETURNS SUNDAY
The Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 on Sunday consists of two races from Gulfstream Park and a trio of stakes from Santa Anita: the Grade III Santa Ysabel, which kicks off the sequence at 1:31; Grade III San Simeon on the hillside turf course and Baffle Stakes, also on the hillside turf course.
The Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 is a $1 minimum wager with player-friendly 15 percent takeout. Before scratches, average field size for the sequence is 9.6 starters per race.
