SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has confirmed Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable’s 2022 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Forte for the nine-furlong Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy on July 29 at Saratoga Race Course.

The dark bay Violence colt was a late-closing second in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets on June 10 at Belmont Park, where he was seven wide in upper stretch and rallied to grab runner-up honors from stablemate Tapit Trice – who is targeting the Grade 1 Haskell on July 22 at Monmouth Park.

Forte won Gulfstream’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on March 4 and Grade 1 Florida Derby on April 1. He entered the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 6 at Churchill Downs as the morning-line favorite, but was scratched the morning of the race with a bruised foot. His Championship-earning season saw Forte capture three Grade 1 races in the Hopeful at Saratoga as well as the two-turn Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland.

Forte will use the Jim Dandy as a prep for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on August 26 at Saratoga. Pletcher noted past success in using the Jim Dandy as a springboard to the Travers, having swept both races with Flower Alley [2005] and Stay Thirsty [2011].

“It was a tough call,” said Pletcher. “We just felt like shipping up here, getting him used to the track, two Travers winners we previously had have done that.”

Pletcher added that Forte will likely breeze on Friday morning over the Saratoga main track following the renovation break.

On Saturday, Pletcher will saddle Bass Stables’ Kentucky homebred Annapolis in the Grade 3, $175,000 Kelso going one mile over the inner turf. The son of War Front last raced when making his 4-year-old debut with a victory in the Opening Verse on May 4 at Churchill Downs, where he defeated next out graded stakes winners Set Piece and Stitched.

“It was a good comeback. The horses that ran in that race have come back and run well,” Pletcher said.

Annapolis was initially targeting the Grade 3 Poker in June at Belmont, which was won by stablemate Emmanuel, but was withdrawn due to a frog injury on his right front.

“He’s been training very forwardly for this,” Pletcher said. “He didn’t really miss too much time because we were able to put a pad on it to protect it and continue training. I just didn’t feel comfortable running him with a pad.”

Annapolis made his career debut in September 2021 at Saratoga with a 4 1/2-length triumph going 1 1/16-miles on the inner turf. He raced at the Spa twice last season when second in the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational and first in the Grade 3 Saranac before a 1 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland.

Although there is a high chance of precipitation in the Saratoga region, Pletcher said he is confident the turf can maintain favorable condition for Saturday’s race.

“He broke his maiden here and he’s run well here. He runs well pretty much every time he runs,” Pletcher said. “We prefer firm-ish ground, but the course looks like it’s in good condition to start the meet. Hopefully, even if we get that storm tonight, it won’t affect things too much.”

Annapolis is out of the graded stakes winning Unbridled’s Song mare My Miss Sophia, who Pletcher saddled to a runner-up finish in the 2014 Kentucky Oaks.

“He’s a very cool horse to train and he’s got a good disposition. He’s willing but also relaxed. She [My Miss Sophia] was pretty professional as well,” Pletcher said. “He’s gotten a bit bigger and stronger, but he’s always been a good-sized War Front. He’s bigger than most War Fronts, I suppose he gets some of that size from the Unbridled’s Song part of his pedigree. He trained well for his 2-year-old debut and has always done the same.”

Pletcher said Annapolis’ ultimate goal is the Grade 1, $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap on August 12 here which also will be a likely landing spot for WinStar Farm and CHC Inc.’s Emmanuel.

Repole Stable’s New York-bred Gambling Girl is on target for the Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 22. The Dialed In bay has not raced since a late closing second to Pretty Mischievous in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on May 5 at Churchill Downs and has remained at the Louisville oval to train towards her next race. Her last victory took place in September in the Joseph A. Gimma at Belmont at the Big A.

“I thought she ran huge,” Pletcher said. “When we got to Churchill, I thought she had trained the best she had ever trained. For whatever reason, she really seemed to like that surface. She ran a huge race and we decided that we would freshen her up a touch and try to keep her at a mile and an eighth. That’s why we skipped the Acorn and pointed for this. Hopefully, she performs well there.”

Bred in the Empire State by Gallagher’s Stud, Gambling Girl is out of the Empire Maker mare Tulipmania.

Pletcher will saddle Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable’s Dreamlike in a Friday maiden special weight going nine furlongs on the main track. The highly-regarded Gun Runner colt has not raced since a close third in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial presented by Resorts World Casino on April 8 at Aqueduct. He was previously second in two Gulfstream Park maiden tests.

“He ran big in the Wood. He’s a horse that’s always trained well. Hopefully, he’s able to put it all together,” Pletcher said. “We’ll have to see how he does. I’d love to have some success in the maiden race, an allowance race and maybe something like the Pennsylvania Derby if everything were to fall into place.”

Pletcher said Spendthrift Farm’s Grade 2 Louisiana Derby winner Kingsbarns has been turned out with an eye on a fall return. The son of Uncle Mo finished second in Monmouth’s Pegasus after finishing 14th in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 6 at Churchill Downs.

“We stopped on him,” Pletcher said. “We sent him to Spendthrift the day before yesterday. He just lost a little bit of weight and we felt like he had been going pretty steadily. We just wanted to give him some time off and turn him out and get him back in training in the fall.”

Hoosier Philly works towards G1 CCA Oaks; 2019 Champion 2YO Storm the Court joins Amoss barn

Gold Standard Racing Stable’s graded stakes-winner Hoosier Philly recorded her first work at Saratoga Race Course on Wednesday in preparation for the Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 22 for conditioner Tom Amoss.

The daughter of Into Mischief logged a half-mile breeze over the main track in 49.49 seconds with regular pilot Edgar Morales up in her second move since winning the Monomoy Girl on June 17 at Ellis Park.

“It was a typical work for her and Edgar Morales flew up to work her,” said Amoss, who is in pursuit of his first CCA Oaks victory. “It was a good work with a strong gallop out. That’s her M.O. She’s doing fine and she came out of it in good shape. Our plan is to run in the Coaching Club.”

Hoosier Philly will vie for the second graded coup of her career after scoring in the Grade 2 Golden Rod in November at Churchill Downs, which capped a three-race win streak to kick off her career. She followed with a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra at Fair Grounds Race Course and a fourth in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks before a brief respite and subsequent runner-up performance in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan on May 19 at Pimlico Race Course.

“She’s done a great job of getting back on track,” said Amoss. “She had two sub-standard races at the Fair Grounds, and each of them had their excuses. Since then, she’s really been herself.”

Hoosier Philly cut back to one-mile in the Monomoy Girl, the shortest distance she had run since graduating in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden tilt on debut in September at Churchill. She set the pace under Morales and drew off in the stretch to win convincingly by 3 1/2 lengths, garnering an 80 Beyer Speed Figure.

Other upcoming Saratoga stakes starters for Amoss could include My Racehorse Stable and Spendthrift Farm’s Sixtythreecaliber, who is nominated to the Grade 2, $200,000 Shuvee on July 23. The Gun Runner bay was last seen posting a third-place finish in the Lady Jacqueline on June 24 at Thistledown where she stalked the pace and fought down the lane, but could not best her rivals as Le Da Vida crossed the wire first 3 3/4 lengths in front.

“She’s doing good and was in today as an main-track only, but that didn’t work out,” said Amoss. “The Shuvee is a possibility, but it would have to be a race that has a very small field, so we’re monitoring it.”

Sixtythreecaliber’s biggest win came in November at Aqueduct Racetrack when scoring a half-length triumph in the Grade 3 Comely at odds of 11-1. Her best result this year was a game runner-up effort to Idiomatic in the Grade 3 Shawnee on June 3 at Churchill.

“That race showed she’s back in form,” said Amoss. “I really liked that race and her last two races, she’s shown she’s rounded back into form as well.”

A new face in Amoss’ barn is 2019 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Storm the Court, who has not raced since finishing a distant fifth in the Grade 3 Tokyo City on October 2 at Santa Anita Park when in the care of conditioner Peter Eurton. The 6-year-old son of Court Vision won the 2020 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile en route to Champion 2-Year-Old honors.

As a sophomore, he placed in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby and Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap on turf before an off-the-board effort in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and a subsequent move back to turf so close out the year, including a runner-up effort in the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile when beaten just three-quarter lengths by Smooth Like Straight.

Last year, he ended a more than year-long respite with a pair of off-the-board efforts in optional claiming company and did not hit the board in five outings. He returned to the work tab in May at Keeneland and trained throughout the spring at Churchill before making his way to Saratoga to breeze a sharp half-mile in 47.69 seconds over the main track Wednesday.

“That was a work where we asked him to be sharp and there’s many ways to get a horse fit – sometimes the workouts are based on stamina and sometimes they’re based on showing quickness and a turn of foot,” said Amoss. “He’s in the process of doing both those things and he’s doing well.”

Amoss added Storm the Court has made a positive first impression in his barn and that he will likely return to the races sometime at Saratoga.

“I put him about two or three weeks away from a race, but I we’ve made no determination what we’re going to do,” said Amoss. “I’ve had him almost two months and he’s a real physically imposing horse – a very pretty, masculine horse. He moves well over the track, and those kind are always a pleasure to train.”

Webslinger to return in G1 Saratoga Derby; Papilio points to G1 Saratoga Oaks

D.J. Stable’s graded-stakes winner Webslinger, who rallied from last-of-11 to finish fourth in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational, will point to the Grade 1, $600,000 Saratoga Derby Invitational on August 5 at Saratoga Race Course according to his Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

The Constitution sophomore was piloted by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano in the 10-furlong Belmont Derby on July 8, but endured a wide trip through the final turn and some jostling in the stretch run to finish 1 1/2-lengths back of the victorious Far Bridge.

“Unfortunately, he got shuffled back and Javier had no choice but to go around,” Casse said. “I’m not sure how much farther he ran than everybody else, but it was much farther than he got beat by, that’s for sure. He came out good and will aim for the Saratoga Derby.”

The 1 3/16-mile Saratoga Derby will offer the winner an automatic berth into the Group 1, $AUD 5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate to be held on October 28 at Moonee Valley Racing Club in Victoria, Australia.

John Oxley and Breeze Easy’s graded-stakes winner Boppy O tracked in fourth position before fading to last in the Belmont Derby, albeit with a built-in excuse that could land him a cut back in distance for the one-mile Grade 2, $500,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame on August 4.

“He was closer to the pace than I wanted, but he also did a little number on his foot,” Casse said. “He twisted a shoe and was a little off after the race. He’s good now, so I’m going to throw that one out and maybe look at the Hall of Fame for him.”

D.J. Stable, Medallion Racing, Barry Fowler, and Parkland Thoroughbreds’ Papilio stumbled badly at the break last out under Castellano en route to a rallying third-place finish in the 10-furlong Grade 1 Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational.

“I’m so proud of her. How she and Javier didn’t end up on their head, I don’t know. She stumbled really hard and we gave up some position,” Casse said. “To me, the pace was pedestrian and – this is how good she is – she was able to run by fillies that had been galloping along and still close. She has a tremendous turn of foot. Both her and Webslinger have been a little unlucky, but they come to play every time.”

Casse said Papilio will now point to the Grade 3, $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational on August 4.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Gary Barber and Steven Rocco’s Solo Album earned a career-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure for her last-out score in the Grade 3 Selene traveling 1 1/16-miles over the Woodbine Tapeta.

Although the sophomore daughter of Curlin is nominated to the nine-furlong Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 22, Casse said she will instead point to the 10-furlong Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama presented by Keeneland Sales on August 19.

“My thought is to see how she handles the track at Saratoga and if she were to train really good then maybe the Alabama. The further they run, the better she’ll like it,” Casse said.

Kumin hoping for success with homebred Fluffy Socks in G1 Diana

Owner Sol Kumin of Head of Plains Partners is hoping to win the Grade 1, $500,000 Diana for the third time with homebred Fluffy Socks, who is one of four entrants for trainer Chad Brown in the nine-furlong Mellon turf test.

Fluffy Socks, by Grade 1-winner Slumber and out of the Kitten’s Joy mare Breakfast Time, were both campaigned by Kumin’s Sheep Pond Partners moniker. Initially standing at Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, Slumber now resides in Hudson, New York at Rockridge Stud for a $7,500 stud fee.

Kumin is no stranger to success at a high level, having campaigned multiple Champions and American Classic winners. Most of his high-caliber runners are typically acquired at public auction, which only makes his homebred 5-year-old mare that much more special to him. He said he has sent 20 of his broodmares to Slumber this breeding season.

“It’s a big race, obviously. We’re looking forward to the next couple of years and seeing some New York-bred Slumbers rolling around wearing our silks,” Kumin said.

Fluffy Socks boasts an 18-5-7-2 lifetime record and is only a slim margin away from achieving millionaire status [$994,580]. She won the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante in November 2020 and captured the following year’s Grade 2 Sands Point at Belmont Park while earning Grade 1 black type when third in the Del Mar Oaks and American Oaks in California.

Fluffy Socks arrives at the Diana off a triumphant 2023 debut in the Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile on May 6, which halted a seven-race losing streak. The last-out victory was her first start since finishing fourth as the favorite in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive in October at Santa Anita.

“I thought she’d run well last time. The biggest question was distance and whether she wanted to run longer or shorter,” Kumin said. “We tried the shorter race and we got the pace setup and she ran huge. Chad had said she was doing great and he expected her to run well and he has them ready to run, so I was less surprised that she ran well. I had a feeling that she would for Chad, but I wasn’t sure about the distance. I thought it might have been too short for her, but she ran great.

“It gives us more options between now and the end of the year and I think she can run anywhere from a mile to a mile and an eighth,” Kumin added. “I think the [Grade 2, $300,000] Ballston Spa [on August 24] going a mile and a sixteenth might be a really good spot for her later in the meet, but she can get the mile and an eighth, too.”

Kumin reflected on his previous Diana conquests with Dacita [2016] as well as 2017 Champion Turf Female Lady Eli.

“Having it be sort of the first big stake at Saratoga makes it a little bit more special,” Kumin commented. “We’ve been lucky to have won it a couple of times and obviously, the win with Lady Eli is what resonates with us the most. It’s definitely one of the best races to win in New York.”

Anna’s Arabesque in good order for Friday’s $150K Coronation Cup

Friday’s card at Saratoga Race Course could include moist track conditions as the National Weather Service has forecasted the potential for heavy rains and thunderstorms in the afternoon. However, trainer Phil Bauer has little concern for track condition for the stakes-placed Anna’s Arabesque, who vies for her first victory against winners in the $150,000 Coronation Cup, a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for sophomore fillies.

“I think it’s an ambitious spot, but you have to take advantage of her 3-year-old season,” said Bauer. “I think we’ll watch the weather close and she’s won on the mud, so I think we’ll run either way.”

Owned by Rigney Racing, the daughter of Munnings graduated last out with a 2 1/4-length triumph in an off-the-turf maiden going the Coronation Cup distance on June 29 at Ellis Park. She earned a 65 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory after dueling for the early lead and drawing clear under Florent Geroux, who will retain the mount from post 3 on Friday.

“I think it was a lot better than it looks on paper,” said Bauer. “You ask a horse to do what she did and a lot of times they go backwards, but she fought on and got the job done. We’re excited to try her back in stakes company. It’s quick back but she seems fresh and we haven’t done a lot with her.”

It was the first main track start for the dark bay filly, who had previously finished a good third to Danse Macabre as a maiden in the Mamzelle in May at Churchill Downs, edged out of place honors a neck behind graded stakes-winner American Apple.

“It was a fight with the entry box early on the spring because there weren’t a lot of races on the turf in Kentucky, so that’s why we ran her in the stake,” Bauer said. “It kind of worked out that she was able to get stakes placed and improve her quality.”

Anna’s Arabesque could give Bauer a strong start to the meet where he will look to continue the impressive form he enjoyed here last season when posting a 13-6-1-0 record. His winners included Rigney Racing’s Played Hard, who scored in an optional claimer en route to her first graded score in the Grade 3 Locust Grove in September at Churchill. Played Hard went on to provide Bauer with his first Grade 1 triumph in this year’s La Troienne.

Bauer said the daughter of Into Mischief has settled in well to Saratoga and is training forwardly towards a start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Shuvee on July 23.

“She loves to train, so we’re excited,” said Bauer. “We don’t think she has regressed at all.”

Triple Trea ships in for G3 Sanford

Trainer Barb Minshall will look to secure her second win at Saratoga Race Course when she sends out Emcee Racing, Jayson Werth, Berry Family Racing, Fortune Farm, and Robert Hahn’s Triple Trea in Saturday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Sanford, a six-furlong main track test for juveniles.

The Woodbine-based trainer, who took down the 2017 Grade 3 Schuylerville with Dream It Is, saw Triple Trea close to win a five-furlong maiden special weight on June 4 over the Woodbine Tapeta by 1 1/2-lengths over next-out winner Bucyk in a solid race in which fifth-place Yacht Boy also returned to score.

“He’s really nice,” Minshall said. “He’s very rideable and it looks like there’s a lot of speed in the race. Hopefully, he makes his big run and can get the job done. There’s some really nice horses in there – the Asmussen horse [Gold Sweep] looks really tough – but he’s coming into it in good order.

“His debut effort was good,” Minshall added. “He just circled the field and ran them all down.”

The $75,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale purchase, by Bolt D’Oro, earned a 63 Beyer Speed Figure for his debut score and has breezed back three times, including a bullet five-eighths in 1:00 on July 8 over the dirt training track at Woodbine.

“It went real good,” Minshall said. “I train them a lot over the dirt. Last week the dirt was real good and he handled it well. He gets over the dirt well.”

Luis Saez will ride from post 7.

Minshall expects to send British Royalty back to New York on August 23 for the $135,000 John’s Call, a 1 5/8-mile turf test restricted to older horses non-winners of a Grade 1 or Grade 2 event this year.

Co-owned by Minshall with Bruce Lunsford, the 5-year-old English Channel gelding has hit the board in the last two runnings of the two-mile Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup, finishing second to Loft in 2021 and third to Siskany last out while making his seasonal debut off a six-month layoff.

“I’m hoping to get him in an allowance race this weekend here – it’s only a mile and a quarter,” Minshall said. “It’s a race in-between, but we definitely plan to come back there with him. He was very sharp off that two-mile race and he wanted to go another two miles two or three days later. It’s so hard to find those long races.”

Minshall said the Ontario-bred will appreciate the marathon distance.

“He should probably be in Europe where they run those long, long races. He’s quite unusual that horse,” said Minshall, with a laugh.

Minshall has enjoyed past success at Saratoga with the aforementioned Dream It Is and also sent down Canada’s 1996 Horse of the Year Mr. Sassafras to run sixth in that year’s Grade 1 Whitney.

“We only ship if we think we can [win],” Minshall said. “We’ve brought some good horses over the years, but you can’t head down to those races and not feel like you have a good horse.”

Ramming Speed makes dirt debut in G3 Sanford

Rice Racing’s Ramming Speed is set to try Saturday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Sanford, a six-furlong main track test for juveniles, at Saratoga Race Course.

The son of Flashback arrives after breaking his maiden for trainer Kevin Rice on July 3 at Presque Isle Downs going 4 1/2 furlongs. The 2-year-old gelding drew off under Gaddiel Martinez to win by 4 1/4 lengths, following a hard-fought second in his first time out on June 14 over same distance and course.

“Ramming Speed has been training good. That last race was more like a breeze, he won handily. It’s time to try the dirt,” said Rice. “I think he’s going to like the dirt.”

The bay is coming back quickly, just 10 days since his victory. Rice said he liked the recent effort and believes it was good preparation for Saturday.

“My rider said he had a lot of horse,” Rice said. “He settled him in behind those horses and made him wait. As soon as he asked him to move out, he went ahead and went on with it, had to be reeled back in to just be galloped out.”

Rice looks to capture his first stakes win at Saratoga after 10 previous attempts. Ramming Speed will be his third starter in the Sanford, after attempts in 2014 [Less Than Perfect, 6th] and 2015 [Save the Drama, 9th].

“We’ve tried a couple stakes, it was a learning experience,” Rice said. “My horses have been really running good this year. I just won with a 2-year-old at Belmont last week [She’s Fire] and it’d be nice to keep the momentum going. I’ve got a nice group of young horses.”

Martinez retains the mount from post 6.

NYRA to host a cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing from Saratoga Race Course and Meadowlands

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring graded stakes from Saratoga Race Course and standardbred stakes action from the Meadowlands.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, offers sequences with races from Saratoga Race Course and partner tracks across the country.
