Lone Star Park Announces 2024 Stakes Schedule

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Thursday, February 1, 2024) – Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie will begin the 2024 Thoroughbred Racing Season on Thursday, April 18 and conclude on Sunday, July 14. The season will encompass 41 race days, featuring 21 stakes worth a total of $2.8 million.

Race fans won’t have to wait long for stakes action as the $75,000 Bluebonnet Stakes, for Texas-bred fillies and mares, will highlight the Opening Night card on Thursday, April 18.

The richest day of the meet, Lone Star Million Day, will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 with over $1.2 million in purses. Six stakes have been scheduled, including the Grade 3, $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile for three-year-olds and up and the 1 1/16-miles $300,000 Texas Derby. Two of the six stakes will be for fillies and mares, the $200,000 Ouija Board Distaff at 1 mile on the turf and the six furlong $100,000 Memorial Day Sprint. The $100,000 Chamberlain Bridge Stakes at five furlongs on the turf and $100,000 Speightstown Sprint at six furlongs will also be contested as part of the Lone Star Million Day card.

Fans of turf racing should mark Saturday, June 29 on their calendars, as Lone Star Park will host the Summer Turf Festival. The $250,000 Texas Turf Classic will anchor the festival at 1 1/8-miles. Three other turf stakes will be run as well, the 1 1/16-miles $125,000 Wasted Tears Stakes, $125,000 Grand Prairie Turf Sprint and fillies and mares will sprint five furlongs on the lawn in the $125,000 Chicken Fried Stakes.

Texas-breds will show their skills in restricted stakes on Lone Star Showcase Day in the $75,000 Lane’s End Danny Shifflet Scholarship Stakes, $75,000 Wayne Hanks Memorial Stakes and $75,000 Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Stakes on Saturday, June 1. Also, both divisions of the $75,000 Texas Stallion Stakes are scheduled for Lone Star Showcase Day.

The season’s stakes action wraps up with Stars of Texas Day on Saturday, July 13. Two-year-olds get a chance at a stakes win as both divisions of the $150,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity will be run at the 5 1/2 furlong distance. The $75,000 Assault Stakes at 1 mile on turf, the six furlong $75,000 Valor Farm Stakes and $75,000 Fiesta Mile, all restricted to Texas-breds will be run as well.
