Soul of an Angel, Power Squeeze Face Off in $140,000 Rampart
Grade 1 Winners Top Field of Eight in One-Mile Test Dec. 26
Filles & Mares to Line Up in $140,000 Via Borghese on Turf
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – C2 Racing Stable, Agave Racing Stable and Ken Reimer’s Soul of an Angel, dramatic winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) Nov. 2, and this summer’s Alabama (G1) winner Power Squeeze will line up together for the first time in the $140,000 Rampart Dec. 26 at Gulfstream Park.
Soul of an Angel, trained by Championship Meet leader Saffie Joseph Jr., drew outermost Post 8 in the one-mile Rampart for fillies and mares 3 and up. She returned to the work tab for the first time since her 19-1 Breeders’ Cup upset with a three-furlong breeze in 38.18 seconds Dec. 16 at Gulfstream.
“She’s going to have one more work tomorrow,” Joseph said. “She’s going to go a half-mile. It’s her first race back from the Breeders’ Cup. We gave her a little freshening and hopefully this will get her back on track.”
Joseph also entered 3-year-old maiden Save Time, another private purchase by Miller Racing that owns four seconds and a third in seven prior starts, and multiple stakes winner Intrepid Daydream, cross-entered in Saturday’s $140,000 Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream.
Lea Farms’ Power Squeeze, winner of the March 30 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), gave trainer Jorge Delgado his first Grade 1 victory in the Aug. 17 Alabama at Saratoga. The 3-year-old filly preceded that effort with a win in the Delaware Oaks (G3), and last out was seventh behind Thorpedo Anna in the Sept. 21 Cotillion (G1) at Parx.
Delgado also has Unsolved Mystery for the Rampart, a 5-year-old multiple stakes-placed mare that was sixth to Soul of an Angel in the Sept. 21 Princess Rooney (G3) and most recently second in a Nov. 24 optional claiming allowance, both at Gulfstream.
Completing the field are multiple stakes winner Charlie’s Wish; Windy Walk, riding a three-race win streak; and two-time stakes-placed Dazzling Move.
Also on the Dec. 26 program is the $140,000 Via Borghese for fillies and mares 3 and up scheduled for 1 3/8 miles on the turf. It attracted a field of 10 including Oct. 4 Waya (G3) winner La Mehana; Grade 1-placed Forever After All; Grade 3-placed Marksman Queen, Three Priests and Shiloh’s Mistress; 2023 Virginia Oaks winner Thirty Thou Kelvin; and Argentinian Group 1 winner Ballado’s Beach, yet to race in North America.
