ECHO EDDIE STAKES, EVENING JEWEL STAKES FOR HORSES BRED OR SIRED IN CALIFORNIA PART OF BIG SANTA ANITA DERBY CARD SATURDAY AT SANTA ANITA
ARCADIA, CA (April 1, 2025)— On Santa Anita Derby Day Saturday at The Great Race Place, some of the top horses bred or sired in California will get their turn in the spotlight in both the Echo Eddie Stakes for 3-year-olds and Evening Jewel Stakes for sophomore fillies. Both events are contested at 6 ½ furlongs on the main track.
The Echo Eddie, which goes as the second race on a 12-race program that starts at 12 p.m. PT, a competitive field of eight is signed up led by I’m a Bad Boy for trainer Luis Mendez and both R Heisman and Style Cat for trainer Peter Miller.
I’m a Bad Boy returns to dirt and cuts back in distance after a sharp front-running victory going a mile on turf in a statebred allowance Feb. 28 at Santa Anita. Two starts prior, the 3-year-old Stay Thirsty gelding was beaten just a nose in the King Glorious Stakes going a mile on dirt at Los Alamitos.
Bred by Terry Lovinger and owned by C T R Stables, I’m a Bad Boy is 10: 3-2-3 with $188,780 in earnings. He’ll be ridden by Edwin Maldonado.
R Heisman, trained by Peter Miller, will have blinkers removed following a fifth-place finish in a first-level allowance for open 3-year-olds at Oaklawn going six furlongs on March 21. While R Heisman is a registered Kentucky-bred, his late sire Far From Over stood in California.
R Heisman is 11: 2-3-1 with $182,200 in earnings for owner Gary Barber. He’ll have Antonio Fresu in the irons.
Style Cat returns to dirt after flashing speed and fading to sixth in the Baffle Stakes sprinting on Santa Anita’s hillside turf course Feb. 16. Previously, the Curlin to Mischief gelding set the pace in the California Cup Derby going a mile on dirt before weakening late to finish third beaten one length.
Style Cat is 10: 2-2-2 with $154,990 in earnings for owners-breeders Kirk J. Robinson and Judy Robinson. He’ll have the services of Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez.
In the Evening Jewel, which goes as the sixth race, a field of nine will line up led by 5-2 morning line favorite America’s Mark. Trained by Mike Puype, America’s Mark will be switching to dirt for her stakes debut. The American Pharoah filly broke her maiden against statebreds going 6 ½ furlongs on turf Jan. 25 then came right back and cleared her first-level allowance condition against statebreds going a mile on the lawn Feb. 22.
America’s Mark is a homebred for Larry D. Williams and Maria Williams. She will be ridden by Hector Berrios.
In addition to the Echo Eddie and Evening Jewel, Saturday’s card also includes the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, Grade II Santa Anita Oaks and Grade III Monrovia Stakes.
