Hutcheson Stakes Winner Rolando Makes Turf Debut in $75,000 Roar Stakes
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Kenneth L. Ramsey’s Cash Equity and Abrumar head trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.’s four-horse contingent in the $75,000 Mr. Steele Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf event and one of two stakes highlighting Saturday’s program at Gulfstream Park.
Though winless in his previous 17 starts, Cash Equity has been knocking at the door in recent graded stakes competition, which include a pair of second-place finishes. He was fifth in his most recent start, the Pan American (G3) at Gulfstream in March.
Abrumar was third, beaten less than a length, in his most recent outing, the Appleton Stakes on March 29, and has three wins from four career starts on the Gulfstream turf.
Joseph, the track’s leading trainer, will also be saddling Daniel Alonso’s Lorenz and Daily Double Racing LLC’s Saratoga Flash in the Mr. Steele, which features an expected field of 10.
St. George Stable LLC’s Rolando will be trying grass for the first time when the 3-year-old son of Vekoma takes on six rivals in the $75,000 Roar Stakes going five furlongs on turf. The Fausto Gutierrez trainee, winner of the Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream in March, returns to South Florida after finishing fourth in the Lafayette Stakes at Keeeneland on April 7.
David S. Romanik and Ronald Spatz’s Most Handsome enters the Roar off a ¾-length victory in a five-furlong allowance race on April 18 at Gulfstream.
Trainer George Weaver will be saddling R.A. Hill Stable and SGV Thoroughbreds’ Turbulent Force and Bona Venture Stables’ Ortley Avenue in the Roar. After winning each of his first two starts, Turbulent Force failed to finish in the top three in either of his two previous starts, the Texas Glitter at Gulfstream and Palisades at Keeneland.
Thursday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $125,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $125,000 Thursday at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the fourth racing day following a May 4 mandatory payout.
Thursday’s Rainbow 6 sequence (Races 4-9) will feature a well-stocked five-furlong optional claiming allowance for Florida-bred fillies and mares on turf in Race 8. Jose D’Angelo-trained Shelovestotravel will seek to follow up on her recent debut victory. The 3-year-old filly led throughout a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight event on Tapeta April 4 to graduate by 1 ¼ lengths. She is by St. Patrick’s Day, a full brother to 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah. Edgard Zayas picks up the mount from Miguel Vasquez, who has the call aboard Gary Jackson-trained Travel Happy, who steps up to optional claiming allowance company after winning three straight claiming races on Tapeta.
In the Rainbow 6, the carryover pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
