Oaklawn-raced Impel, finally, is a stakes winner.

After four previous misfires in black-type events, Impel broke through in the one-mile $200,000 Groupie Doll for fillies and mares Sunday at Ellis Park.

Ridden by Florent Geroux, Impel ($12.62) held off Regaled by a head, with Oaklawn-raced Alpine Princess, the 4-5 favorite, another 1 ¼ lengths farther back in third. The winning time over a fast track was 1:37.63. Brad Cox, Oaklawn’s co-sixth-leading trainer last season, conditions Impel and Alpine Princess.

Impel, in her second lifetime start and two-turn debut, was an 8 ½-length allowance race winner in March 2024 at Oaklawn. Impel subsequently ran in four stakes races for 3-year-old fillies in 2024, finishing third in the $600,000 G1-Ashland, second in the $600,000 G2-Eight Belles, third as the favorite in the $200,000 G3-Indiana Oaks and second as the favorite in the $200,000 Cathryn Sophia. Impel was exiting a one-mile allowance victory June 22 at Churchill Downs.

A 4-year-old daughter of Quality Road, Impel races for her famed breeder, Juddmonte. Impel has a 4-2-2 record from 10 lifetime starts and earnings of $556,116.

Stall applications for Oaklawn’s 2025-2026 meeting are due Sept. 18. The 64-day meeting is scheduled to run Dec. 12-May 2. … Nothing Personal ($10.20) was an 8 ¾-length debut winner of a seven-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds Saturday at Colonial Downs for Arkansas native Greg Compton, Oaklawn’s fifth-leading trainer last season. Nothing Personal, a son of Violence, is owned by Mag Racing, which also campaigns multiple Oaklawn stakes winner G W’s Girl with Compton. G W’s Girl, later Saturday at Colonial Downs, finished third in the $100,000 Tyson Gilpin Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs. … Favored Oaklawn-raced Sushi Man ($2.80) won the $75,000 Minnesota Derby for 3-year-old Minnesota-bred colts and geldings Saturday at Canterbury Park. The Minnesota Derby was 1 mile and 70 yards. … Oaklawn stakes winner Ain’t Life Grand finished second in the $75,000 Cyclones Handicap for Iowa-bred colts and geldings Saturday at Prairie Meadows. … Oaklawn-raced Admiral Dennis finished third in the $200,000 Ellis Park Derby Sunday at Ellis Park. … Oaklawn debut winner This Is Uscar finished third in the $200,000 R.A. “Cowboy” Jones Stakes Sunday at Ellis Park. … Oaklawn maiden winner Lured Away finished third in the $100,000 Petramalo Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds Saturday at Colonial Downs.
