CORNUCOPIAN, GI WINNERS SUBSANADOR AND STRONGHOLD LEAD TALENTED GROUP OF OLDER HORSES SET TO GO IN THE GRADE III SAN CARLOS GOING 7 FURLONGS AT SANTA ANITA
ARCADIA, CA (March 24, 2026)— Exciting 4-year-old Cornucopian, Grade I winner Subsanador and 2024 GI Santa Anita Derby winner Stronghold are among a talented group of older horses set to clash in the Grade III, $100,000 San Carlos Stakes going seven furlongs Sunday at Santa Anita.
Cornucopian returns to the stakes ranks for trainer Bob Baffert after an eye-catching allowance victory going 6 ½ furlongs Jan. 31 following a nine-month layoff. In his comeback, the colt by Into Mischief stalked the leaders before having to check behind horses near the quarter pole. Cornucopian deftly gathered himself after the trouble and spurted away from the field in the stretch to win by two lengths. This will be his first stakes try since testing the GI Arkansas Derby last May when making just his second start. Cornucopian is owned by SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables and partners. He’ll be ridden by Juan Hernandez, who was also aboard in his recent victory.
Subsanador will be making his first start in nearly 18 months for trainer Richard Mandella and owner Wathnan Racing. A South American import by Fortify, Subsanador was last seen winning the GI California Crown going 1 1/8 miles in September 2024 at Santa Anita. He will have the services of Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who also rode the 7-year-old horse in the California Crown.
Stronghold, trained by Phil D’Amato, is also returning from a layoff. The 5-year-old horse by Ghostzapper hasn’t started since August when finishing second in the GII Pat O’Brien going seven furlongs at Del Mar. He’s seeking his first victory since taking down the 2024 Santa Anita Derby by a neck. Campaigned by breeders Eric M. Waller and Sharon Waller, Stronghold will have regular rider Antonio Fresu in the irons.
Adding depth to the lineup are Grade II-placed runners Bartholdy, trained by Steve Knapp and Judge Miller, trained by Mark Glatt; Getaway Car, who cuts back to a sprint for Baffert after finishing third in the GI Santa Anita Handicap March 7; and Listenupshance, who most recently was second in the six-furlong Palos Verdes on Feb. 15 at Santa Anita for trainer Doug O’Neill.
