Jockey Ramon Vazquez, Oaklawn’s leading rider last season, recorded his 4,000th career North American victory (United States and Puerto Rico) Thursday night at Remington Park, according to Equibase, racing’s official data-gathering organization.
Vazquez reached the milestone aboard heavily favored McKinsense ($2.60), who broke his maiden in the seventh race for co-owner/trainer Steve Martin. Vazquez is now based at Remington Park in Oklahoma City.
Vazquez has 548 career victories at Oaklawn, including 76 last season to capture his first career riding title in Hot Springs. Vazquez has also topped the standings at Remington Park, Santa Anita and Los Alamitos in Southern California, Lone Star Park in suburban Dallas and Prairie Meadows in Iowa.
Vazquez, 42, won approximately 1,500 races in his native Puerto Rico before he began riding regularly in the United States in 2011. Vazquez rode his first career Oaklawn winner Jan. 13, 2012.
Vazquez is the 11th Oaklawn riding champion to reach 4,000 career North American victories, according to Equibase, joining Pat Day (8,803), Larry Snyder (6,388), Johnny Longden (6,032), Calvin Borel (5,310), Robby Albarado (5,222), Tim Doocy (5,061), Cliff Berry (4,457), Eddie Maple (4,398), Jon Court (4,263) and Luis Quinonez (4,062).
Those figures are based on victories in the United States and Canada, according to Equibase, which doesn’t recognize statistics compiled in Puerto Rico for milestone purposes. Vazquez has 1,568 career victories in Puerto Rico and 2,434 in the United States.
Day, Longden, Borel and Maple are all members of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
Vazquez is also nearing another milestone with $98,837,587 in career purse earnings, according to Equibase. Vazquez’s top career mounts include Grade 1 winners And Tell Me Nolies and Practical Move and millionaire multiple Grade 2 winner Lone Rock.
Lambeth Shines at Keeneland
Oaklawn stakes winner Lambeth captured the Sycamore Stakes (G2) for 3-year-olds and up at 1 ½ miles on the turf Friday at Keeneland.
Jose Ortiz rode Lambeth ($16.98) to his one-length victory for owner Carl R. Moore Management and trainer Joe Sharp. Lambeth was a front-running winner of the $200,000 Temperence Hill Stakes for older horses at 1 ½ miles in 2025 at Oaklawn. He came from well off the pace to win the Sycamore, covering 1 ½ miles over a firm course in 2:28.08.
A 5-year-old son of champion Arrogate, Lambeth raised his career earnings to $906,377 following his sixth victory from 21 starts.
