Two of Oaklawn’s biggest races this year produced winners of two of the country’s biggest races.
Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty and Eclipse Award winner Nitrogen highlighted a strong showing by Oaklawn-raced horses in the 43rd annual Breeders’ Cup World Championships Saturday at Keeneland.
Sovereignty, in his final career start, won the $7 million Classic (G1) by 1 ¾ lengths for breeder/owner Godolphin and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. The Classic was for 3-year-olds and up at 1 ¼ miles.
About 90 minutes earlier, Nitrogen was a two-length winner of the $2 million Distaff (G1) for fillies and mares, 3 and up, at 1 1/8 miles. Nitrogen races for breeder/owner D. J. Stable and dual Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.
Sovereignty ($5.94) became the 17th Oaklawn-raced horse to win the Classic. It was the third Classic victory for Mott, who was Oaklawn’s leading trainer in 1986 and inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1998.
Mott won the Classic in 1995 with Cigar and 2011 with Drosselmeyer. Cigar also won the 1995 Oaklawn Handicap (G1) in his first of consecutive Horse of the Year campaigns.
After winning the Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont Stakes (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1) en route to 2025 Horse of the Year honors, Sovereignty made his 4-year-old debut at Oaklawn. He finished second in the $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap (G2) last April, a 1 1/8-mile race that marked his first start against older horses.
Sovereignty likely locked up 2026 Horse of the Year honors with his Classic victory. He also won the prestigious Whitney Stakes (G1) Aug. 8 at Saratoga in his previous start.
Racing Saturday over a fast track, Sovereignty covered 1 ¼ miles in 2:00.36 under regular rider Junior Alvarado. Sovereignty raised his career earnings to $10,516,550 following his eighth victory from 13 starts.
Sovereignty will begin his stallion career in 2027 at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky. Sovereignty is by perennial North American leading sire Into Mischief.
Nitrogen, North America’s champion 3-year-old filly of 2025, raced three times last season at Oaklawn, finishing second in April’s $1.25 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1). The 1 1/16-mile Apple Blossom is Oaklawn’s biggest two-turn prize for older fillies and mares.
Nitrogen also won the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) and finished third in the $400,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) earlier in the Oaklawn meeting. Casse was Oaklawn’s third-leading trainer in 2025-2026 with 23 victories, including a meet-high 10 stakes.
Nitrogen ($3.58) secured an Eclipse Award as North America’s champion older dirt female with her Distaff victory. Nitrogen, the 3-5 favorite under regular rider Jose Ortiz, ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.90. The track was fast. Nitrogen finished second in last year’s Distaff (G1).
A daughter of recently deceased Oaklawn maiden/stakes winner Medaglia d’Oro, Nitrogen has a 10-6-3 record from 19 lifetime starts and earnings of $4,108,354.
Nitrogen became the 22nd Oaklawn-raced horse to win the Distaff.
Oaklawn has raised the purse of the Apple Blossom Handicap and Oaklawn Handicap to a record $1.5 million for the 2026-2027 meeting that begins Nov. 27. The Azeri, the final major local prep for the Apple Blossom, will also carry a record purse ($500,000) in 2026-2027.
In other Breeders’ Cup results involving Oaklawn-raced horses, Foie Gras and Explorafinished second and third, respectively, in the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at 7 furlongs and Full Serrano finished third in the Dirt Mile (G1).
Foie Gras was a two-time stakes winner last season at Oaklawn. She won the $135,000 Oaklawn Anywhere Overnight and $135,000 Bugler Overnight for trainer Mike Maker.
Explora won the $750,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) last March for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. The 1 1/16-mile Honeybee is traditionally Oaklawn’s second of three major preps for the Kentucky Oaks (G1), the country’s biggest race for 3-year-old fillies.
Full Serrano finished a troubled fourth in the $500,000 Oaklawn Mile (G1) last March for Southern California-based trainer John Sadler.
Full Serrano won the 2024 Dirt Mile (G1).
