HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Gulfstream Park’s carryover jackpot pool for Saturday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 (Races 7-12) will be a guaranteed $300,000, and will be anchored by the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), the world’s richest race.
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the eighth consecutive racing day Friday at Gulfstream Park, producing a carryover jackpot of $194,124,16.
Multiple tickets with all six winners (Races 6-11) were each worth $$6,135.30 Friday.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on days when a mandatory payout is scheduled, the entire pool is shared by those holding tickets with the most winners.
Wagering options abound for Pegasus World Cup card
The Pegasus will also anchor the Late Pick 4 and Late Pick 5. The Late Pick 4 (Races 9-12) will have a $1 million pool guarantee, while the Late Pick 5 (Races 8-12) will carry a $500,000 guarantee.
Greenpointcrusader marks return with a win while making first start for Pletcher
Grade 1 winner Greenpointcrusader, who was last seen finishing seventh in the 2016 Louisiana Derby, returned to the races Friday and won the featured 10th race, an allowance optional claimer at one mile.
Ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez, Greenpointcrusader won the race by 2 3/4 lengths over Flashy Jewel, the pacesetter, who was overtaken by the winner in the stretch.
Greenpointcrusader, the 6-5 favorite in the five-horse field, returned $4.40. He completed the distance in 1:36.02.
A 4-year-old son of Bernardini, Greenpointcrusader is owned by MeB Racing Stables LLC, Brooklyn Boyz Stables and St. Elias Stable. The colt was making his first start for trainer Todd Pletcher, who began training him about 2 1/2 months ago.
Pletcher said he has plenty of options with Greenpointcrusader, who won the 2015 Champagne Stakes (G1) around a one-turn mile at Belmont Park.
“I think the way he handled a mile today puts us in a position to do just about anything,” Pletcher said. “Ultimately, I think he will stretch out further, but he is also tactical enough that I think you could consider backing him up to seven-eighths.”
Shaman Ghost stretches legs for Pegasus; War Envoy & Prayer for Relief paddock school
Stronach Stables’ Shaman Ghost had one final piece of work for the Pegasus World Cup Friday morning. The 5-year-old covered three furlongs in 38.43 while working from the six-furlong pole to the three-eighths marker. Exercise rider Kelvin Pahal was in the saddle. It’s quite common for Shaman Ghost’s trainer, Jimmy Jerkens, to blow-out his horses a day or two before race day. It also was the modus-operandi of his father, the late Hall of Fame trainer, Allen Jerkens.
With the bulk of the 12-horse Pegasus field having schooled in the paddock yesterday, War Envoy and Prayer for Relief were the only Friday schoolers for the $12 million race.
Ruis Racing’s War Envoy joined Race 2 runners in the paddock, while Zayat Stables and Rosedown Racing’s Prayer for Relief visited the paddock alongside Race 4 participants. Cherry Wine, who like Prayer for Relief is trained by Dale Romans, joined stablemate Prayer for Relief in the paddock. Cherry Wine is entered in tomorrow’s inaugural running of the $400,000 Poseidon Handicap.
WHO’S HOT: Jockey Miguel A. Vasquez booted home three winners on Friday’s card. Vasquez started the day off with a victory in the opener aboard E Z’s Mistress ($5.20) and followed with trips to the winner’s circle aboard Zitman ($19.40) in the sixth and Francesco Flier ($9) in the ninth.
First race post time on Pegasus World Cup Day is 11:30 a.m.
